High school sophmore seeking 2k help.

Post by sparson92 » October 4th, 2007, 6:02 pm

I am currently a sophmore in high school and looking to get my 2k down before winter conditioning starts for crew season. Last season, the time that got me on the first freshmen 8 was 8:54. Once i started training on my own this fall, my time dropped to 8:46, which is currently my PB. My goal is 8:10 (or lower if possible). I'm currently following the 2,000 meter program from the UK concept2 site. This upcoming season is my first year on the varsity team, and i want to try to impress the coaches from the start of conditioning.

Although I have room to improve, i feel i understand the technique.

There's a number of areas that I'm struggling with:
Overcoming pain
Pacing
Breathing
Power.

Any help in improving in these areas would be much appreciated.

Hi Sam,

I like your spirit and your goals! Unfortunately, I have nothing to offer you regarding pain, breathing, pacing etc. I am a self-trained non-competitive erger.

May I suggest you also post this question under the "training" tab in addition to the women's forum. You might have more readers that might have suggestions for you.

The readership on this forum usually picks up in November.

I hope you get some advice soon!

Susan

What sort of pain? If it's butt ache, you can try a piece of fairly firm sponge rubber on the seat. I got mine from a disposal store for only a few cents and cut it to size. It made a huge difference. If it's a pain in the lungs through hard breathing, it might be an idea to try and improve your general fitness by longer rows aimed at improving your stamina. Re power, there are a some of extremely good weights workouts aimed directly at increasing power in rowing. One book I know of is called "Getting Stronger" by Bill Pearl. It has two workouts for rowing - one for in-season and one for off-season.
Re breathing - I had huge problems with this too - and I'm still working on it!!
Good luck,
Tina

Hi Sam,

As far as pacing goes, an 8:10 2K is about a 2:02.5 split.

The most efficent thing to do would be to hold a 2:02.5 the whole way. Because it would be difficult to stick to one split the whole time pacing is key.

Start off a little bit higher, say 2:04 and just work your way down from there.

If you start off pulling a 1:55 for the first 500, get tired, and pull a 2:05, then try to go back down that is not efficent rowing and it will be more difficult to achieve your goal.

As with any other sport, rowing gets better with time. Keep training hard and if you don't hit your goals don't be discouraged, there will always be a chance to try agian.

Good Luck!

Trish

one of the best thing to do is regular 30 min steady ergs and running.
I am 16 and my 2k is 7.32.5 in addition to all of myy regualr training i always do a seond independent session wheather its cor or a run or erg if possible.

I never go into a 2k knowing exactly what i will pull i will know that have done the background work and have a rough idea but its always a great surprise coz no one ever trains on 2ks all the time. try not testing to often as well cos that will put you off is they dont consistantly improve.
