Wish I could show all of you the 5 lovely deer that are standing in my back yard right outside my window at this moment. After all the bad weather we've had it's cold today but clear and sunny and they are happily munching grass as the snow has melted today.
You don't have to be the best, all you have to do is keep at it. Pain is only weakness leaving your body. Nahongvita!

Jen, welcome back! I wondered what had happened to you. Graduate school . huh? Good for you. Good job on the HC, not easy with a job, let alone school. I'm stuck with about 20lb I can't seem to get rid of. If I figure anything out, esp if it makes loosing weight as much fun as gaining it, I'll pass it along!

Keep up the good work and welcome back!

Pam

Hey Pam!

Hang in there on the 20 pounds. I actually gained *back* about 8 pounds of my 40, but with the HC, they came off again. And that's in spite of the holiday munchies! I might just have to jump into the January Challenge just for the momentum....

Nice to hear from ya's!

I'm working on 15 pounds. Eight from my Oz vacation 2 years ago. Four from my southwest vacation last spring. hree from my England vacation last summer. Not a good trend.

One of my January Challenge goals is to lose 7 pounds in a month. Erging and a 1200 cal a day diet will do it for me, both can be painful. We all need to get our metabolisms revved up again so the pounds will simply melt off.

HC & weight

Post by efg » December 21st, 2006, 4:19 am

I'm sure the HC is helping, but I'm not eating much and not losing much. The problem is that I am not exercising very strenuously, I think. Since falling off the erg (literally) my tailbone is still sore, so I have to hold back when I row now. It is frustrating, but I am glad that I can modify my approach to still do something. I guess I will have to be patient and wait for the january challenge to really get serious about losing the extra flab I've accumulated over the past however many months. Grumble.

Has the pond dried up?

Post by Bufflehead » December 3rd, 2008, 7:56 pm

Greetings Ducks!

How about getting the pond back up and splashing? At long last, I sat my tail feathers on the rower. Gotta start somewhere! I have been left to my own devices for quite some time and now I have to start all over again.

Oh well, at least I'm willing to give it a go. It would be great to hear what all of you ducks have been up to.

It is rather quiet this year.

I really only show up for the Holiday Challenge. Since 2007, I've been running--one marathon and two half marathons and few shorter races. I was in Philadelphia in November for a half. What a lovely city--except for the horn honking. Seemed rather loud to my provincial ears.... It was nice to see scullers on the river though, so late in the season.

I am about half way through the challenge--may need to row a half-marathon to make up for lost time this past week.

Yo Buf!

Good to see the migration is back on the duck pond. It sounds as though life got in the way for you too.

I am seriously going to get back on the machine and do gentle sessions. Its either that or major back surgery. I hope that building up my core muscles and losing some weight will help my sciatica. I can't lose 15 pounds without some form of exercise, and the erg is a low-impact sport.

I have 3,940,232m on my log. Only 60,000 more for another million meter glass, and then I will have a set of 4! Is anyone else out there close to their million mark now?

Buf, how much do you plan to row in meters or time per session? Would you like to join me? I'm aiming for 1/2 hour to start, and work up to 45 mins 2-3 times a week.

Hi,
I am a newbie to rowing. Was introduced to the equipment in cardiac rehab and fell in love with the activity. I have been rowing on my own Concept2 for one month now and have logged 57,231 m so far. As I am only 4 1/2 mos out from open heart surgery for Mitral Valve repair, I am not setting any particular goals other than working on technique and rowing 3 - 4 days a week. I am surprised at the meters I have done already.
:o
Live well, long, and joyously,
Winona

Hey Grams -

I sort of got side-tracked again. Funny you should mention sciatica. That's something I've been dealing with for quite a while now. If you still want to buddy up, I'm more than willing to give it a go. Better late than never.

I'm moving toward my 2 million mark, so I'd really like to get back into this again. I hope to hear back. This time I won't take so long to splash back in again.

Yo Yo Buf!

I encourage you to get back on the erg and enjoy it. Just stop before you are too tired, and don't push hard fora better time or distance at each session. Not pushing myself is hard for me, but doing too much is even harder on my back. It is slowly getting better, thanks to this regime:

1/2 hour-40 minutes erging every other day
a 20 minute session 'upside down' on my inversion table after exercise and before dinner. Inversion is really making a big difference.
Breaking up physical work sessions with short periods of rest instead of working non-stop 'just to get it done'.

I converted all 50 years of my music to mp3 and put the playback on 'random' while rowing. The variation in tempo (ex: medieval chant followed by Elvis followed by the Kingston Trio then middle eastern belly dance) keeps me from pushing myself too hard. Its fun to see what will play next.

I am 1/4 of the way to my 5th mil now. I start my erging days with coffe from my custom 4 million mug for motivation.

I would enjoy having you as a partner to row virtually with. I will be out of town starting next week for 2 weeks however. I will pm you and we can work out a schedule etc.

Thanks,

Hey Grams -
Maybe this is the push I need! I will definitely partner up with you. I've got to get back at this. I love the mug you designed! I wondered where you got that when I first saw it.

I'll be waiting to hear from you.

I had too many fast food meals and Boston cream pie and ice cream sundaes on my trip back east. I didn't get any erging in so I am back to square one. It takes me 3 weeks of erging before I feel like I'm back into it and enjoying it.

For me the hardest part of starting again is reprogramming my head to make erging my highest prioirity and to say no (to myself and others) to things that interfere with my rowing time. Thats where the Ducks come in-if I have a prior commitment to erg, then I will be more likely to follow through. I expect it works the same way for some of you too.

Yesterday I did 5000 meters, and today I will do the same. I always want to push myself too fast, and then I hurt something and have to stop. This time I will go a bit slower.Fortunately I have a lot of music on my computer and I am playing it all at random. It keeps me going, wondering what will play next! I will start with 5000 meters for 5 out of 7 days. Then step it up to 30 minutes or 35 minutes the next week.

Are there any Ducks and Fiends others who would like to join Buf and me for the new season? I'll post a weekly score sheet for myself here.

Regards,

Hi Everyone!

I'm back! I've severely fallen off the rowing bandwagon due to working 2-3 part-time jobs and going to graduate school full-time. I *finished* school on 11/1, woohoo!!! :D

I used to average 35-50K/week, and now I'm lucky to average that in a couple of months. The worst part is, I gained back my 40 pounds I lost since getting my rower in 2005.

I'm off to a new start--I've managed to row enough the last couple of weeks to push myself over my 5 million meter mark! I'm hoping to get back in shape enough to do 200k for the Holiday Challenge (choke!). I rowed 45 minutes yesterday and 35 minutes today, and I'm appalled at the distances I'm doing compared to what I used to do, wah! Oh well, I can only go up, right?
