[HELP] PM5 continuously reboots after 100% completed firmware update

Hi
Experienced BikeErg user. Performed firmware upgrade many times using cable and utility, now attempted FIRST time with App, all went smooth (except taking quite long, half an hour, from version 331 to 334). Reached 100% but now continuously reboots can’t use no more, no reset, no cable+utility no usb flash drive, why? Because continuously reboots so unable to stay connected for more than couple of seconds to the utility for example (in the 2 seconds the utility being connected it says "334 present and no need to upgrade")

sometimes says SUCCESS (for a while) but always reboot...

Call or email concept 2 (or their local representation), they are extremely helpful people.

Connect it up to a PC, run the utility and go into the options and you are able to reload the existing version.

Go into monitor maintenance and select "Fully reload the firmware"

I don't recommend ever updating the firmware via USB or the App.

I have probably updated a thousand monitors now over the last 12 years and a fully charged laptop plugged into the mains and a USB cable is the way to go.

Have you tried removing the batteries for a few minutes, then reinstall and see what that gets you? After that JaapvanE has given good advice.

Just updated both my PM5's to the latest firmware release no problems.

V36 to V37 and V175 to V176 using the latest C2 Utility 7.14.00 no issues.

Doesn't take 12 minutes, takes about 3 or 4.

Windows 11 HP laptop and a short USB cable.

Try a factory reset and see if it comes back.

It takes way longer with ErgData.

everything won't work except the solution given by official support (the "generator wire" has a central role in triggering or not the continuos reboots, must perform the operation with the wire unplugged)

• Remove the generator wire from the PM5
• Press and hold the top button and the Units button on the front of the monitor.
• While holding those two buttons, press and release the recessed reset button on the back of the monitor.
• Continue holding the two buttons on the front of the monitor until you see "Setting Default Bundle..." on the bottom line of the display. You can now release the two buttons and after a few moments the monitor display will go to the Main Menu when it's finished with the reset.
• Plug the generator wire into the PM5. The PM5 will display the update message but it should continue updating and end on the Main Menu once the update is complete.

That sounds easy. Curious why you hadn't thought about this procedure by yourself 😁

"with wire disconnected" was the key, probably every recovery methods would have worked .

Since firmware was flashed 100% maybe the solution provided at least avoid flash again

Not really thought about the tach cable being unplugged, I typically always remove the monitor from the rower to update it.

The older PM3 was different it needed to be connected to the rower and you actually had to pull the handle using the old V101 updater to get the "Comms" working properly or else your laptop couldn't see the monitor and it timed out.

I doubt you need to pull that cable if you do a USB cable update. Personally I would avoid the App or USB Flash method of updating the monitor for technical reasons.

Have to agree with Carl. I recently got the update notice on the ErgData app. Hooked up the laptop and used the C2 utility. Maybe 5 minutes later update over and ready to go. Seen too many complaints with the app approach. Just my .02.

always used cable and c2 utility.
Tried first time with the App and all went smooth till the end.
Except taking much time a and except continuos reboots.
Continuos reboots sorted out by disconnecting the cable, only with cable disconnected I could operate whatever kind of recovery attempt and then plug the cable in again

I had this same issue with the PM5 on my BikeErg.
I contacted Concept2, provided my serial number and they told me I had to buy a new PM5 unit, as the one I have is out of warranty!!!!
The issue is following a firmware update that Concept 2 has provided and they want ME to buy a new unit???
This is ridiculous and how is this fair Concept2??
BTW I (attempted) the update using a cable as always.
Has anyone else had this issue with Concept 2?
Thank you

Phil

this worked for me ("with wire disconnected" was the key, probably every recovery methods would have worked). But if they have not prompted you perhaps not working because your PM5 is too old
