Wattbike to Erg comparison

Post by sammymcg » October 4th, 2021, 1:00 am

Hey guys just wondering what the comparison was between an erg split and wattbike wattage. Would it be the same as the split watts

The WattBike was developed by Concept2 UK folks.

The performance monitors are virtually identical in terms of measuring power output.

Do you mean wattage on the Wattbike versus wattage on the Concept 2 BikeErg?

Very closely matched for the same effort up to about 400w. Higher than that and the Wattbike seems a bit easier to produce the higher powers. When you get up to peak power then the difference is massive. Probably at least a couple of hundred watts.

Ignore splits. Only focus on wattage. Splits / pace / speed / km/h, or whatever you want to call it is far faster on a Wattbike for the same effort.

For example I can average around 360w for an hour on both bikes. Wattbike would be 44km+ with that wattage, but BikeErg would only be 36.1km ish.

What bike is more accurate in the real world and comparable to road cycling do you think casey?
8k difference over an hour is quite big.

Hard to say. Pedalling is pedalling, I guess. BikeErg pace is just a doubling or row/ski pace for the same power output, whereas Wattbike pace is far faster.

Wattbike feels like a faster, smoother ride, whereas BikeErg takes far longer to get up to speed. Think Sherman Tank verses Ferrari!

Obviously with road cycling there are far more variables in play. Power to weight, the bike you’re riding, aerodynamics, terrain, wind, etc that all have an influence on speed for the wattage you’re producing.

The Wattbike doesn't self calibrate like the BikeErg it's calibrated with an electric motor.

The OP has posted this in the BikeErg section so I'm assuming we are talking BikeErg vs WattBike.

I've used my BikeErg and Taxc Neo and my BIL's Wattbike Atom for Zwift racing.... my best 20min and 30min output was on the Wattbike it is extremely smooth and the gear changing is instantaneous. They all measure watts accurately but feel different to ride.
BikeErg solid smooth ride good for holding a set wattage/cadence but C2 missed a trick by not having the resistance adjustment lever at an easier height.
Taxc Neo 2 on road bike is the most realistic to real world outside riding. It is a smart trainer which provides resistance and road feel on zwift.
Wattbike is smooth compact and allows multiple household members to use zwift.

Probably best to forget about distance when indoor riding and work with power.
