PM5 Meters ONLY

Post by pwritter » August 19th, 2020, 11:50 am

Why is there the no option to switch to Miles instead Meters / Kilometers. Is it due to the heritage of the rower? Mathematically it's easier, but I'm really surprised I'm the first to ask for this...

Competitive rowing on water started at 2500m, then the Olympic distance was reduced to 2000m. So it's always been measured in metres.

There's only three countries left in the world that are not metric in some way, that's the USA, Bahrain and Liberia. So you're alone in wanting strange imperial distances.

The conversion factors have now been fixed (as an exact number of millimetres for an inch (not the other way round)) which gives 2.54cm == 1inch and 1.609344 kilometres == 1 statute mile. The length of a metre is fixed as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in
1/299792458 of a second. 2000metres is 1.24274238 miles.

I measure distances on the bike in kilometres. I'm able to do the conversion with mental arithmetic 8km == 5miles (it ain't difficult). I'm waiting for my Gov't to follow the Irish example and change distances between towns to km and speed limits to kmh. The Irish Gov't did it very sensibly by changing the limits first then gradually changing road signs from miles to kms.

Bahrain isn’t one of the three. I think you meant Myanmar.

How about eliminating distances and using time only for the erg? If an erg goes anywhere, it's by mistake. At least races would all end together, with no advantage for fast people who get to row such short times. Why should I have to row for ten minutes when everyone else finishes at 6, 7 at the most?

There's already the Wolverine, BPP and Interactive plans that use time only. I'll bet there will be plenty of ladies happy with this too. Equal rights for women and OAPs.

As I said follow the Irish example.

Your photo was taken not far from where my mam lived, in Haydon Bridge.

It was taken in Garrigill, Cumbria, in 2011.
Here is the current Streetview.
