Long term impact..

Post by zij » November 30th, 2021, 8:02 am

Hi. I use the BikeErg 5-6 times per week, doing on average about 200-250km a week at around 240w average with peaks for sprints etc..

The one thing I'm unsure of is the impact of the noise from the BikeErg will have on my hearing over the long term. It is quite noisy at 240w of effort, but obviously increasingly noisy at higher watts/effort.

Anyone have any thoughts or experiences?

Download a suitable app on your smart phone to measure the noise level at your ears.
Compare the level with publications on the health effects of noise exposure, e.g. https://publichealthmdc.com/documents/n ... report.pdf
If the level is near to hazardous, you may also include the frequency spectrum of the noise in your inquiry.

I've measured the C2 bike noise <-- with a couple of apps on a cell phone at 80+ decibels, which is quite loud and can definitely damage people's hearing over time. Your average watts are quite a bit higher than mine so the decibels would be higher for you.

I'm experimenting with methods of absorbing and/or blocking the noise before it gets to my ears but haven't yet come up with any definitive solutions. The best way is to stop the noise at the source, the second best is to stop the noise between the source and one's ears, and the least effective is to block the ears, which I have found to not be effective.

Just wear some ear phones and play music, it will totally put the noise from the bike into the background.

The ear phones I've tried don't block any noise, and they're quite annoying to wear. Head phones do but they get quite hot in just a few minutes. The longest I've worn them is 10 minutes when it's cold. Trying to block sound at the ears is the least effective method.

I use in-ear headphones with active noise cancelling. They allmost completely block the sound of the erg.

I always wear gigantic over the ear headphones. Don't think they cause that much Over heating. But also never thought of the BikeErg as 'loud'.
