Summer Solstice 2019

Post by tgarrett3794 » June 22nd, 2019, 9:25 am

as far as I can tell. I haven't seen this topic yet, so I thought I would create it here.

let's hear about those summer solstice 2019 results!!!

I'll start things off. This was my first challenge/half marathon

half Marathon/summer solstice challenge 21,097M

well I did it!!! and honestly it felt really good. I was only 1.9 seconds off my target pace so I'm extremely happy with that. my drinking something every 2000M seemed to work really well, and I had no major cramps or twinges at all.

first 10K was great, but my pace started a little above race pace and gently fell for the rest of the race.
second 10K was much tuffer and I didn't see the light at the end of the tunnel until the last 5K
Was able to pick up pace a lot during the last 3K, and I stopped taking drinks breaks at that time as well.

overall, very happy with my results. I did notice that even though my pace dropped that my spm stayed close to the same or increased slightly. This tells me that I need to build up endurence in my muscles to keep pushing at full compacity for longer distances. my heart and lungs felt great, and I tried to keep my hr in what I considered a well managable hr for a long distance like that.

Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M
1:39:48.9 21,097m 2:21.9 122 721 25
19:53.0 4,300m 2:18.7 131 751 25
20:14.5 8,600m 2:21.2 124 727 25
20:35.4 12,900m 2:23.6 118 706 26
20:58.0 17,200m 2:26.2 112 684 26
18:08.1 21,097m 2:19.6 129 742 27

will do this again definitally, and are aimly to do a FM next year

Well done - you decided on a pace and pretty much stuck to it - so congratulations on your first HM :D
Glad you managed to program the monitor OK :)
As Stu has also said on the other thread, taking a drink every 2k not really needed. If you are well hydrated before you start, then every 30 mins is probably enough.

A long way away from any of these PBs now!!

thanks for the feedback. I have had problems in the past not being hydrated enough during my triathlons, so I thought I would try that and see. the one thing I noticed, is stopping to grab the bottle, then picking the handle back up...destroyed my average pace, so I would totally do it different next time. I think going with a time instead of a distance may work better for future races.

and also. the button sequences given on the other thred were exact, but I also reached out by email to concept2 and within an hour somebody had also replied with the button sequences, which speaks lots to concept2's customer service.

GOOD MORNING,
IT TOOK ME AWHILE TO POST THIS BUT I COMPLETED A 115,200 METER ROW ON JUNE 21ST TO BENEFIT THE ALZHEIMERS ASSOCIATION AS PART OF THEIR NATIONAL THE LONGEST DAY CAMPAIGN. IT TOOK JUST UNDER 16 HOURS BUT I WAS SUCCESSFUL IN ROWING 7,200 EVERY HOUR OF THE DAY. I KEPT A PRETTY CONSISTENT TIME OF 35-40 MINUTES TO COMPLETE THE METERS WHICH ALLOWED FOR A 20 MINUTE BREAK TO HYDRATE, STRETCH (A LOT), AND CHAT WITH FOLKS WHO STOPPED BY TO EITHER DONATE OR LEND MORAL SUPPORT. I STARTED AT 6 AM AND ENDED AT 9:38 PM AND I MUST SAY IT WAS A VERY UNIQUE EXPERIENCE. #ROWINGTOREMEMBER.

Extremely well done!

Just a hint, though - block capitals are considered as SHOUTING on forum pages (and in electronic communications generally), so you may want to check the caps lock key next time, to avoid people reading your posts the wrong way...

But well done, again.

I apologize for the block capitals. I just thought it was defaulting to it because any other time i can’t get my cap lock button to work on the i-pad. I didn’t mean to come across that way at all

I'll let you off the shouting for a worthy task completed well.

I was at the Celtic Manor this last weekend, that reminded me of the rowing we did with three folks to each machine rowing 19'30" ON, 40' OFF with 30" for change overs. I did 100K in that session. The treat was crunchy nut cornflakes at 03:00 in the wee dead hours.

That’s a lot of rowing for some crunchy nut cornflakes?? Did you know that ahead of time?

Yes, the plan was 300K per machine and crunchy nut cornflakes when folks got hungry, tired or bored.

Thanks to all for the positive feedback about the recent fundraiser row. Although I’ve been rowing for about 4 years, i’m new to the forum, chat thing. (As you can tell by my lack of etiquette, sorry i promise to get better) Based on your experiences with participating in long distance rows what type of diet did you consume in the weeks leading up to the row? What did you eat and drink during the day of the row? (Besides CornFlakes, lol) I’m curious because I plan to row this distance on an annual basis and recognize that each year i will be a year older and thus it will be that much harder. Thanks in advance for any advice.

So I hope this info carries over, I have done a half ironman before, so not as long as your event, but my fueling was basically this.
every 30 mins on the bike, or every 2 miles on the run, I would have either water or electrolites. you definitely need both, not enough water, you will start to get head akes and can't think clearly. not enough electrolites, you will cramp up. also, every hour or so. I would do energy jells.

the idea was to get calories into my body that [1] my body could injest quickly and [2] cause as little stomach upset as possible. For a longer event such as yours, you will probably need something more substancal then energy jells, but hopefully others will throw their advice your way. but I think water and electrolites are more important, they will stop you in your tracks without them

for water, I use...just water, I like room temp, because the cold shocks my system, even later in the race.

for electrolites, if you can afford a good product with no sugar, use that, it is definitally more expensive, but a higher quality product with small amounts or no added sugar will definitally be a benefit.

hope this helps and sorry for the long reply here.

The rowers in Wales just did it on spec. No special preparation needed or done. It was just a MAD row for a charity in a funky hotel in Newport (Casnewyyd).
