Dogs Days - make flexible to fit summer travel better

Post by carlb » August 22nd, 2011, 9:24 am

The Dogs Days requires rowing/skiing specific meters in 7 day periods i.e. :
  • Week 1, Aug. 1–7: 20,000 meters
    Week 2, Aug. 8–14: 30,000 meters
    Week 3, Aug. 15–21: 40,000 meters
    Week 4, Aug. 22–28: 50,000 meters
I would suggest allowing the order (or combination) to be flexible, i.e. you must complete 1 week each of 20k, 30k, 40k, 50k in any order you wish. That would allow fitting in the rowing during the busy summer travel period and may result in more participation.

I traveled 4 days one week, it happened to fall into the 30k week so it was pretty easy to fit it the remaining 3 days. Had it been during the 50k week, or I was gone more days, it might not have been possible. I would probably do the month as 30k,40k,20k,50k so each 2 week period is 70k and I have an easy week before the 50k.

------------ Dog Days of Summer ------------
The Details
■Row or ski, indoors or outdoors, completing one each of the four distance goals in each of the following four timeframes indicated and log them in your online logbook. You may do them in any order.
■Distance Goals (do in any order):
  • 20,000 meters
    30,000 meters
    40,000 meters
    50,000 meters
■Timeframes:
  • Week 1, Aug. 1–7
    Week 2, Aug. 8–14
    Week 3, Aug. 15–21
    Week 4, Aug. 22–28
The distance goals do not have to be done in one sitting. The goals do not have to be done in the order listsed, but each of the 4 distances must be done (at minimum) and must be completed during one of the timeframes. By the end of the challenge, you will have accumulated 140,000 meters.

On the Dogs Days page you could promote the Holiday Challenge with a comment:
  • Doing 90,000 meters over 2 weeks is about half of what is required to complete the Holiday Challenge 200,000 meter goal, row 45k/week for 2-1/2 more weeks and you'll have 200k in 31 days.
