For you stats people, one of our higher mileage rowers, Darryl Bathel (DuluthMoose on the forum) has left on a business trip, and will not be adding any more meters to our team for the rest of the challenge. He regretted that this was the case, but let me know when we started that this was his schedule.

Want to just thank Kristine and the team for extra motivation. I committed to 100,000 meters, but I'm at 137,000 and will commit to 200,000 for the team. It's a good thing this ends 1/31/08 because I'm leaving Friday 2/1/08 for the Mardi Gras in New Orleans and my rowing would definitely hit the brakes then.

Well dang, Tom, it looks like you are going to pass me up. I cannot go 20000 meters a day. Just yesterday I FINALLY
made it to 15k in one sitting. I have to go home eventually. I am going to try and keep ahead of you though. I will row both saturday and sunday this week. It is 15 below zero here today so I can't go snow shoeing and miss out on rowing this weekend.

extra meters
... I just went an extra 2k ... trying to figure out, by trial and error, how to use the C2 log card function!

Kona: thanks for the

Darryl (we kept trading places for #3) was one of the rowers that really inspired me to keep on going. It looks like we will have one million meter rower (great job) and perhaps two. My goal was 600,000. That gives me eight days to row 160,000 meters with an average of 20,000 per day during that time. I missed a day at the beginning of the challenge. Thus, my average will be below 20,000 per day (I have had to row 23,000 - 26,000 per day to make up for it) at 600,000 meters.
With those others increasing their meters & inspiring me, I am now committed to 620,000 for the challenge. That means an extra 2500 meters per day. That will give me a 20,000 avg.
Kristine: the bride (of 36 years) has been asking me to teach her to row. I've held off since I knew my form wasn't so great. Thanks to my session with the coach, I will see if she would like to get involved. She's more of a runner and hits the treadmill usually. Cross-training on the erg/treadmill would be a good idea while at the same time add some more meters to our moon journey!!
FYI: I met with an on-water coach yesterday (23rd) & learned a LOT. We went over basic techniques (I never had seen anyone row properly on/off the water). Although I had looked at the tapes from Concept II and watched others row, I learned a few new things about rowing that helped me & hopefully help others:
After our session at a local gym, I went home last night and rowed (taking in mind proper form). By concentraing on my posture, leaning back more (slightly), having the power emit from my heels (rather than the upper part of my feet) and slowing down my return to a 1/3 ratio (on the slide), I was able to cut 31 minutes off my 11,000 meter time, while at the same time slowing down my stroke rate by seven strokes & dropping my splits 30 seconds per 500 meters.
The coach also suggested (in addition to rowing) that I work on basic core exercises which will strengthen my stomach/back/hips in addition to conitnuing to take weight off. Makes sense to me.
Earlier, I had talked about (perhaps) training for a marathon. Bob (our 84 year old rower) brought up the fact that the less time on the erg results in less rear-end/back pain. Prior to my session with the coach, I was starting to doubt whether I could handle staying on the erg long enough for a marathon. However, with the faster/less effort rate that I have discovered, perhaps I will make it.
It's off to the erg for 10,000 (
whoops - gotta do about 12,000 twice a day to get my new total) or so meters (it's 0500 hours).
Who else will join me in upping their meters over the next eight days?

Actually, I asked PJM where to find the cheerleader emoticons - and after two or three tries was able to follow directions (detail never a strong suit). So thanks are due to PJM of the Timbuk2 team!
As far as rowing extra meters, I'm in - I've met my initial commitment of 200K - and in far less time than the Holiday Challenge. My new goal is 300K. There's a lot to be said for the extra motivation from the team - and thanks again to Kristine for getting the team "room" established in the forum.

Breast Cancer Awareness Team Daily Rowing Diary
Hey Team,
I have just created a new topic under the JVC for Brian, the guy doing the Breast Cancer Awareness team row. Please check it out, and give him some words of encouragement in these last few days. Also, spread the word to the other teams if you are visiting their team rooms. Don't forget to take the poll on his topic, too.
Everyone is doing a fantastic job in this JVC! I am so proud to have been a part of the process for you all to reach higher and go farther than you ever thought possible. It really is a TEAM effort, though, so kudos to the team as a whole (and to our visitors - PJM and others!). This has been a lot of fun!

Team LUNA-TICS,
Here is another worthy cause that will only take a few minutes of your time to make a difference for.
The band, Five for Fighting, is generously donating $0.40 to Autism Speaks for each time the video is viewed. The funding goes toward research studies to help find a cure. When you have a moment, please visit the link below to watch the video and pass it along to your friends and family.
