"Full Moon" by Juan Ramon Jimenez
The door is open,
the cricket is singing.
Are you going around naked
in the fields?
Like an immortal water,
going in and out of everything.
Are you going around naked
in the air?
The basil is not asleep,
the ant is busy.
Are you going around naked
in the house?
Full Moon
Big,
I really like that poem--although I don't actually plan to engage in any of those activities, especially since Baldwinsville is just outside of Syracuse, which we all know is synonymous with snow.

Thanks to those of you with the nice comments. I enjoy coming here because it's quite a positive influence on me and has me rowing a LOT more than what I did for the last challenge.
I find it quite interesting how my body reacts to rowing. There are some days when my rear-end and back really bother me right away (I do have a pad) and other days when I feel like I can just keep going.
FYI: as of this morning I have lost 26 pounds since the day before Thanksgiving. I went to a dietician and took classes to help me understand what to do and how to eat. Due to bad cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure levels (all due to a bad lifestyle resulting in me beefing out). Although I have limited my caloric intake (under a doctor's supervision), I have never starved and am eating properly.
Yesterday, I got my blood test results back from the doctor. Everything was in a normal range. Great incentive to keep at it.
Other than watching the Concept II tapes, I have never had any instruction in how to row properly. Thus, I found a rower to help me get my form down correctly and will be meeting up with him January 23, 2008. I think that my times are not really fast enough for a 2000 meter race, but plan on changing my training a bit to increase my times and perhaps the marathon challenge in March/April.
Not sure if I will be ready for it, but I'm working on it. I think cross-training is also in order to keep things in balance and prevent overtraining.
It's quite amazing to me the meters rowed by the leaders. Keep up the good work. Tom

Re: Full Moon
I understand. It was -7°F when I got up this morning. Such a beautiful day that I went for a 90-minute XC ski instead of rowing. Hope the team will forgive me!elfm wrote:Big,

You impress me! I'm honored to be on the same team
I have enjoyed participating in this virtual team challenge this month. Knowing all of you are putting in such amazing meters is motivating for me. During the off season (I am a rower who is on the water from April to December) I try to erg, but depending on the year, my motivation falters. I usually do the Thanksgiving to Christmas challenge, but have not done any others. I thank all of you for inspiring me.
I am impressed with the make up of this team. We have such diversity. Individuals around 80 cranking away on the erg, people who keep increasing their own goals, new erggers who want to learn to be more efficient on it, and many more. I am delighted to share the name LUNA-tic with all of you. (Thanks Kristine for including me.)
I have been rowing for 20 years and have years of experience on an erg. Many competetive rowers are intimidated by the erg. It is so nice to find people who enjoy being at one with the machine. Please feel free to send me a personal email if you have any questions about rowing or ergging. I'd love to help if I could. You could always post something here as well, but I'm not always as quick to read and respond.
Keep up the good work everyone and congratulations on your success.

On the shin pain, my guess is that it is from the running, as I do both, and running, not rowing makes my shin muscles sore. I would ice them down for 5 minutes after every run, and even after every row until the pain goes away. If the pain is being caused by inflammation, this should help. Ice them a couple times a day if you can, once right after working out and once before/in bed. Use a cloth or some other cover between your skin and the ice. It also might not be a bad idea to not do any excercise at all on your off-running day. Your muscles might simply need a day of rest as they repair.
Tom,
Only 2000 calories a day with all the rowing you are doing? No wonder you are shedding pounds. Good for you on your multi-pronged approach to your weight loss. You are doing all the right things, and are seeing the results of that. Congratulations on your great progress!
Calamity,

JUST KIDDING!
We aren't called the LUNA-TICS for nothing!
I don't think that this same team room will be around after the JVC. I am going to try to start a year-round team room somewhere else on the forum so we can keep on encouraging one another. It would be kind of a bummer to just stop all this great discourse at the end of the month.
As for the other challenges, any time there is a virtual team challenge, I will enter this team in it. The team roster stays intact from one challenge to the next. People can continue to join the challenge team as well as the year-round team. People can also leave the team whenever they want.
So you will not have to do anything in the future to be included in the team challenges. I will email you a reminder that you are on the team and the challenge details, and your meters will automatically be logged on this team unless you leave the team.
Well I didn't row nekked but I did meet a goal I have been striving for. I rowed 15k all in one sitting today! If I was to row in the buff I am sure my boss would frown upon it. They seem to think it is not "clothing optional" in the fitness room.

I work at Farm Bureau and one of the perks of our job is that we have a full fitness center that we can use anytime we are not working and of all the fab things....there is a c2 rower there.bg wrote:where do you work? that's great that they have a rowing machine there...barbaraMy rowing has to all be done at work

final push
Hey Lunatics, we are close to ending the challenge with a 200,000 rower average. As of tonight, we are each 65,222 meters away. Looking at averages from the first 22 days, if we each increase our rows by an average 1,000 meters a day, we will make a 200,000 average.
I'll give it a go, how about you?

So will I. I figured it out today that in order to meet my goal of 600,000 meters (my original goal was to beat 200,000), I will have to row 23,200 meters per day. In order to do this, I will have to row about twice a day. As mentioned in a couple of emails, I find
Law & Order, Monk
and the
News, a good way to pass the time.
All this rowing has also inspired my bride of 36 years to start exercising more (she also joined Weight Watchers).
Wondering about the two rowers at the top of the pack - are you shooting for a million meters?

Tom, you can do it! My usual daily row for this challenge is somewhere in the 20's all in one sitting (mostly because I can't row every day, so am trying to make up for lost daysthomaspinckney wrote:So will I. That's great to hear that your wife is inspired. Why don't you ask her to give the rowing a try, and get her on the team? It doesn't matter how many meters she logs for the challenge - the main goal is to establish a rowing routine. The team just had a new rower start yesterday, in fact.
We started our boys out at 500 meters easy rowing, and have them add 200 meters per day. If this seems like too much for her, cut it back to what she feels she can do. Maybe she would like it if she tried it (although your achievements might be intimidating for her at the start.)
