Join team LUNA-TICS and row to the moon in the JVC

Post by Kristine Strasburger » December 19th, 2007, 11:53 am

Our goal in the 2008 JVC is to accumulate enough meters between us to row to the moon and back! That's a lot of meters, but every little bit helps. Be a part of this fun virtual team, no matter how many meters you hope to row in January.

Send me an email with your first and last name and your email as they appear in your log book, and I will enroll you on our team.

Send this info to me at: Kristine Strasburger <kstrasburgerk@yahoo.com>

Err, it'll take a bit longer than a month even with all the rowers in the world in your team.

The average Earth/Moon distance is 384,403,000m.

It's a long way to the moon, and even longer to get back!

Well, yeah, it is kind of a long way, but then again, what else is there to do?

Rowing to the moon and back

Post by Kristine Strasburger » December 22nd, 2007, 1:45 am

As one of our new team members, Steven Larky, so aptly put it...

"384 million meters. Assume each person does 192,000 in a month. You just need 4,000 rowers.

Well, 3998 (counting you and I).

Steven Larky"

Hey! We might just be able to do it. We have 12 team members for the JVC now.

Hello Luna team,

I would like to join your team for the Team Challenge.

I row about 10000 meters a day that would get us a bit closer to the moon. :D

Regards

I'm just looney enough

Post by A CREW R » December 25th, 2007, 12:39 am

I think I might be just looney enough to do this. I got my erg last January and went through fits and starts. I did the March challenge, but then life and Tax Season got in the way. I just finished 100,000 for the holiday challenge and having a goal was a motivating factor.

I'd like to commit to 25K /week, what do I do to sign up?

If you can use another rower who can commit to 100,000 in Jaunuary, sign my up.

I too would like to volunteer my meagre meters, if the offer is still good.
I can produce 100000 for the trip in Jan. B)
Kicks my butt..

384,000,000 not a problem

Post by BlindManNoFish » December 28th, 2007, 9:33 pm

Because there is:
1. No air in space...
there will be
2. No resistance on the flywheel...
hence...
everyone should be able to turn out 0:30/500m times or thereabouts
because...
3. My personal tests indicate that that is the pace at which the internal resistance of the machine becomes a limiting factor.
Since 0:30/500m is roughly 4X as fast as we normally go, we'll only need 1/4 of the number of people that someone originally proposed (4000/4=1000)

I propose we simply total the meters of all rowers and compare that to 384,000,000 meters, factoring in that we don't have to deal with annoying wind resistance.

96,000,000 meters shouldn't be a problem, right?
