What is wrong with me? Compartment syndrome?

Post by redwoodrower77 » September 16th, 2015, 4:39 pm

Last march I was suffering from what I thought to be exertional compartment syndrome of the forearms, where my forearms would swell and tighten up by the end of a hard erg piece such as a 2000m or 6x500m or 4x1500m. They would feel rock solid and have a burning pain that would fade after 25 minutes or so. Since then I backed off the erg and rested my forearms, now when I erg again (doing steady state) I feel a slight tightness (not painful). However, when I wake up the next morning, my forearms and hands feel fatigued, tired and weak (as though I have half the grip strength I usually do). Now, I am starting to feel the same thing in my lower legs. While running stairs or erging, I feel some tightness but not pain, and the next morning my legs feel weak and tired. What is this? I want to get back to rowing as soon as I can, but this is really starting to concern me....

This forum can be an excellent source of information concerning many aspects of rowing. But it is not the place to get advice about a specific physical problem. And if someone does come up with some sort of amateur diagnosis concerning yours, ignore it.

The lack of response to your post indicates that no one else seems to know what's wrong with you. And that actually is a positive rather than a negative. It hopefully will cause you to get help from the best possible sources--a physician or an exercise physiologist. And if the problem is really starting to concern you, please make that appointment as soon as possible.
