Recent hip replacement

I'm new to the forum, and looking for some advice. I'm 60yrs and underwent a total hip replacement 8 weeks ago. It's gone extremely well, to the point where I'm walking freely without a crutch, cleaning/polishing the car, playing (gentle) 2 on 1 basketball with the kids already. The rowing machine was my favourite at the gym 5 or so years back, however my bad hip had gotten to the point where it was just too painful, so I stopped (and in fact stopped much of my exercising because of the pain/hassle). I'm really keen to get back into the rowing and regain my fitness. I've read conflicting things re use of a rowing machine post-hip replacement. In fact my surgeon said to avoid it, althought a search online has found plenty of stories (and medical advice) suggesting it is ok. I sat on one the other day and found it perfectly comfortable through the whole rowing movement.

Anyone got any thoughts? I guess I'm looking for encouragement, however if this is something I SHOULD avoid, I'll do so - reluctantly.

Many thanks

(and what a fantastic forum this is)

Talk to your Physical Therapist not the surgeon  , but the general opinion is go for it. Take it easy and listen to your body. Good Luck.

Hip Replacement

John - I posted earlier in another thread about my hip resurfacing (not replacement) and how I have been able to resume rowing.

I row strapless and barefoot and have found this to be the best for me. I tried rowing with the straps and shoes but found that having my feet/shoes restricted/tight with the straps put too much torque on my operated hip.

I myself waited about 2 years before I started rowing but wish I had started earlier because the rowing loosened muscles that were causing me a great deal of discomfort. The rowing motion is low-no impact and while you are bending at the waist and using the hip it is a fluid motion and not jarring.

I personally was still pretty raw at 8 weeks out but if you are plaing 1-1 bball without discomfort you should be able to resume light rowing. I initially just walked and rode a spin cycle with no resistance as PT just to get some range of motion back. I would speak with your PT person and see what they indicate.

Now with the resurfacing I still have my entire femur (it was capped) so there is very little if any chance of dislocation. If you have one of the new total hips it is likely OK to row because they tend to be shorter and more like the resurf. but I would check with your doc to find out which one he implanted and whether it is one of the newer, shorter ones. Even if it is the longer type of implant you are probably OK to row as long as you are not too aggressive.

I have had to alter my sessions and now I row more for distance rather than "flying and dying" like I used to do. Older and wiser I guess :)

Best of luck - Andy
