Hi All:
Getting some stifness in my shins and ankles lately and wondering if my form is off. Specifically, when I start the recovery, my toes come up off the foot rest a bit as I pull myself forward. Watching some videos of others, I see some people keep their feet (toes) glued to the foot rests while others let their toes come up off the foot rests as they come forward.
Are you "supposed" to let your toes rise off the footrests as your recover?

They'll raise a bit if the straps are not snugged down tight.
I have a little room under mine because I row barefoot and don't want them tight, thus my toes lift a little but not much.
Check the video of Eskild Ebbesen and you'll see that he does much the same, and the straps are cinched up for his races.

I have found that rowing with tight straps puts a lot of strain on my knees. I keep them fairly loose and let my toes do what they will. No knee pain that way.

Darren,
Give strapless rowing a try, and yes, let your toes stay down on the foot plate. They lift because of too much tension in your lower leg and trying to dig in your heels to drag yourself through the recovery. The Drive is for the hard work, the recovery is for, well, recovery.

Howdy!
You're toes should only lift if you're wearing pantyhose while erging. Not that I've tried it. Really. No, really - I haven't. Anyway, it's none of your business what I wear on the erg. (Watch out for control tops - they really restricts your breathing.)

I could of course facilitate just that thing. Though beware, the next thing you know you will be needing a boat. (which another item I deal in.)
