Welcome to the forum, Andy.
Others with more experience with dodgy hips will hopefully reply, but in the meantime, one option might be for you to try rowing a few times and see how it goes.
C2 has a rower finder tool that can help you locate local gyms and clubs:

Good Luck

Well I can say that rowing with two hip replacements is no issue at all. I would say that significant pain in hips while rowing says get the I hip replaced. I had the anterior approach. Down time a couple of weeks.

I had the same problem 3 years ago with my right hip. Walking became unbearable, rowing limited to 15 min. Had the hip replaced and back to a normal lifestyle with a lot of physical activities, other than running/basketball. My recommendation is to consult with your primary care doc and then an orthopedic surgeon. Good luck.

Get expert medial help with OA. If walking is that painful you need help. If you can't walk then you become inactive and everything gets worse. At age 55 most people have some OA symptoms, so you not alone and treatment is understood. Your GP can help, they can also refer to a dedicated arthritis practice.
Talk to them about walking, rowing, etc. They should talk you through what is possible with pain relief, minimum activity levels you should be keeping and worse case eventual hip replacement.
Likely they will want you to try rowing, swimming, stationary bike or some other gentle form of exercise. Rowing and other exercises can strengthen the muscles around your hip, increase your flexibility and reduce pain. They can also help you control weight. Depending on your insurance using a physical therapist can get you started and be available for questions, but see a doctor first.

When rowing we are seated, so the hip load Is no more than what we want It to be. When walking, it's our entire weight plus any dynamic loads, One hip at a time.
