Patella Tendonitis

Hello, well I've blown a fetlock. After a great Last season of 7300km, I've started a new job and only managed 961km this season.
The combination of rowing, three hours driving and 9hours at a desk has stopped me with patella tendonitis so I can't walk. I don't think it's the rowing but I am wondering if strapless rowing has somehow contributed through not straightening the leg.
Anyway it's day 2 of not being able to walk so has anyone got any tips.
I'm getting patella knee straps, ice and booking physio. I'm gutted!

Presumably you've already seen this and similar:

Over 7Mm/year is a lot of repetition, not far off a million strokes, so whatever you do, make sure your style carries zero risk.
The anatomy seems to show that all force from quads and hips goes through that tendon; if so, the knee angle will be critical.

Hi James
Had physio now. Apparently my sartorius muscle isn't really activating so kneecap has been on the wander.
Apparently it only fires when you straighten your knee so all my rowing and riding hasn't been doing that.
Fingers crossed I can rehab it.

Lol. (my sister rode horses for years, jumping. 'fetlock' brings back loads of memories.)
Rehab works wonders. From your rowing progress you can push through anything they can throw at you.
If you get some good exercises and feel like it, please post them. I'm too rowing centric, and could use them. Hoping this last wave of covid blows by to other activities are doable soon.

I am in rehab for this at the moment. Worth looking at the Martin Koban’s website, he has researched this subject, collected evidence and published books. The exercise that helps me the most is one legged squats on an inclined step, facing downhill with the step at an angle of 25 degrees. 90 reps on each leg. The upward motion is assisted with the other leg because it’s the downward motion that rehabilitates the tendon. All the best with your recovery.

Why do you not straighten your leg while rowing strapless? I go strapless for all my training up to 1:40 pace and straighten my knees, well the one that will straighten and the other one was straight as it will go.

Hi Tony,
I think I must be unconsciously using my legs as a counterweight to stop falling off the back. I just don't straighten them without straps
