Upper back pain caused by erg...Help

Post by Luca Scherba1 » May 17th, 2020, 9:21 am

I am 14 years old and about a month and a half ago I was doing a light erg when I suddenly felt a pop in my upper back. I immediately knew something was wrong so I got off of the erg. The pain is behind my shoulder blade and it hurts just doing daily things like moving, especially sneezing and erging (even though I have had to stay away)

Today, I tried going on the erg and after only 5 strokes, the pain immediately returned like it had never disappeared. I am in a lot of pain and have had to put a massive halt to my training plan which I am very disappointed about.

I am worried as, even after 6 weeks and only being 14, it is showing no signs of clearing up. This age is also a very important age to build up strength for the future.

I have been icing it every day although it seems like nothing is working.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I could have done and what I could do to help it heal.

Please respond.....

Many thanks.

It may be a thoracic disk, you should see a doctor. My advice is avoid the ergometer until you can see a doctor. It is important you see a medical expert. Don't see a chiro, see a proper doctor, an MD.

I have thoracic spine neurological pain at T4-T5 and it can be brutal, though mine isn't discogenic. It is a really unpleasant region to have pain.

Yes Luca - a doctor to start with and maybe a referral - stay away from Chiros and the like.
You need a proper diagnosis and management

@lindsayh i couldnt help to notice your signature and saw that you completed some outrageous scores such as 6:47.4 2k and incredible other scores and you state that you did them at 65YO+?? unless im misunderstanding it, thats insane, and far under world record for that age category by nearly 1 minute. Have you considered mentioning this to concept 2 and applying for some World records?, if you havent im sure u should.

Thanks for noticing the times Ivan - they stand up pretty well but not really that close to WRs in the fat old man category (maybe you assumed that I was of the female persuasion?). The 65+ 2k WR is around 6:35 now but I sat next to Chris Cooper at the Worlds when he did his 6:39 which was the record at the time ('17). That was my 6:47 day. My longer stuff is not much more than pretty good - not very aerobic physiology sadly.

This. 100%. Doctor may well get u to a physio. FWIW icing with muscluar related issues (disc different?) is only really advised first 72hrs thereafter heat but in your case it sounds like it's something different.
