Rectal problems (Sensitive topic)

Isn't it typical? Always, when you are having great training sessions or preparing for a race you end up injured?

I'm a bit embarrassed over this but I was hoping others have experienced similar issues.
After rowing 30,000 m last Saturday, I now have terrible rectal pain. After some intense googling and based on the symptoms described, I'm sure it is an "anal fistula". Is this common among (indoor) rowers?

I can't say I have ever suffered from it, one of the few issues I haven't had.

Strangely enough my wife was talking about this with her mate yesterday and it's quite common with cyclists apparently (her mate's boyfriend is a keen cyclist) so I assume it probably is with rowers too

Probably should be in the health forum this one....arse chaffing is the worst I have endured but maybe jumping into 30km+ so soon after starting exacerbated this for you.

Slowly slowly catchy monkey.

why don't you just post a photo of the affected area and we can all pretend to be smarter than Dr Google?
(just kidding of course)
Not sure if a fistula is a cycling hazard but I can imagine that the direct pressure of the seat may lead to those problems. Very different to the seating position on the erg of course. Hard to imagine that it could be a rowing complication (never seen a thread here)
Sweat scalding and chafing of the butt is quite a possibility in a very long row though.
A ano/rectal fistula is a definite doctor diagnosis and needs attention

The OP actually doesn't really know what the 'issue" is of course which is why he needs to get a proper diagnosis

Worst I have had on Erg is scarring of the coccyx even although I use a seat pad.
Have occasionally also had chaffing if I have used running shorts to Erg in.
On the bike, I sometimes get excruciating pain on my undercarriage but hopefully have sorted that by finding a good combination of shorts and saddle. Have BikeErged since mid-Sept with no problems what so ever and can now do up to 40km with only a bit of adjustment now and again.
Your issue certainly appears to be the proverbial pain in the butt.
Go see a doc

While we are on this topic....erg related injuries.

About 6-9 months ago I was getting dull pain in one of my 2-veg (as in "meat and 2 veg")...took me a while to realise it was my inside thigh hitting it repeatedly when using the erg. Some shorts have better support than others...I find "pure running" shorts the worst for this as so minimal. Had me worried for a little while even though I am outside the most common age range I think for testicular cancer.

What shorts do people recommend for erging?

Personally I wear any. Nothing special and I have done all of my ultra distances in them too.

I normally use cycling shorts, tight and cushioned, and never had any problems, but I never did more than a HM.

Not sure I can pull of cycling shorts  might need other shorts over the top!
