I developed a large friction blister on my achillies tendon area from the top of my shoe rubbing.

I have not been able to row for 5 days... tried modifying my shoes... no luck

Does anyone have some advice on prevention / footwear etc.. ?

That happened to me with an expensive pair of Nike. So changed back to my $15 pair and all good

Double skinned running socks sounds good. I've been hiking and doing long distance walks for a couple of decades and what really has worked for me has been a thin nylon sock liner worn under my walking/hiking socks. That and keeping your feet dry and your shoes powdered also help. The best course of action I've found in dealing with blisters is to stop as soon as I feel any heat in the blister prone parts of my feet (for me that's always been the heel) and treat the area immediately - dry it, clean it, dry it again, and apply moleskin dressing, change into dry socks. Hope this helps.

Maybe not a permanent solution but Compeed plasters are great and stick very well and for a few days. They are padded also which helps to continue training.
