I use an Eddy Fletcher HR method for testing HRmax:
The test consists of seven four minute pieces, each rowed at a consistent 500m pace.
The first four minute step should be set at a level which will allow you to complete the four minutes comfortably with no signs of distress. Rest for 60 seconds between each step. Note: if the monitor is set for four minutes work and 60 seconds rest, all information is stored for recording at the end of the test in the Concept 2 Indoor
Rower Performance Monitor.
During each step, the heart rate will rise, but should stabilise after around three minutes.

Note:
To determine the appropriate start level, you will need to know your current 2,000m time. Divide your 2000m time by four to establish 500m split time.
To determine your Step 1 add 4 seconds to your 500m pace and then from this pace add successive amounts of 6 seconds counting back six steps. After rowing 4 minutes at Step 1 move up to the next step, and so on, until Step 7. This stage should be performed flat out to elicit your maximum heart rate.

The following is an example of an indoor rower who rows 2,000m in 6:40. Average
500m split = 1:40 add 4 seconds = 1.44.
Add successive 6 seconds –
Step 1 – 2:14, Step 2 – 2:08, Step 3 – 2:02, Step 4 – 1:56, Step 5 – 1:50, Step 6 – 1:44, Step 7 – flat out
for me:
RPE 6/7 ~ 85% HRMax ~155 BPM
RPE 7/8 ~ 90% HRMax ~160 BPM
RPE 9 ~ 95% HRMax ~ 165 BPM
RPE 10 ~100% HRMAx ~172 BPM

My max is around 190 now (more like 202 when I was in my 20s) so with a hard erg session it wouldn't be at all unusual to push towards the 180s as time goes on.

But is not it risky row with such heartbeats?

When you are healthy no, our heart is limited in his beating, its perfectly fine to at some times get it (very) high. You should certainly not do this every session. Longer aerobic sessions should be a lot calmer. Don,t race your training.

risky? not really. healthy? nothing extreme is healthy and that includes masses of repetition and/or regularly pushing your HR extremely high. There is often a cost elsewhere but then again life is risky...make your choices. :)

I think the more you do the less the risk Francesco so it needs to be trained for but I reckon it is good not bad. The best 2km training includes about 5% of time at or above 95% of maximum HR. For me I would see 170 with some of the very hard intervals on a regular basis with MHR about 172 (resting 43) Age doesn't mean back it off either - keep it up not put it down!

use it or lose it...
if you have no heart problems, its ok.
if you have doubts - visit the cardiologist of your choice and heed his advice.

The missis is always telling me I don't have a heart.

I only row what I feel comfortable with on the day, so if I jack it in after 5 minutes, that's enough.
