exercise induced asthma

Post by powerhouse » December 22nd, 2010, 11:16 am

Okay so I'm in my mid 20s, in good shape, but I have exercise induced asthma.

I have been working out consistently for most of my life.

My breathing gets better with more workouts. I have been doing more cardio- cycling mostly, but still lift weights.

I'm wondering what the c2 rower will do for me? Is anyone else in the same boat?

I'm thinking it should help my overal endurance.

Before I started rowing in HS, I had never done a sport besides gymnastics as a child. An injury forced me out of that and into six years of weight gain and worsening asthma. After one season of rowing as a sophomore, I still had slight asthma issues but I could run a mile easily. After two years of rowing, I was running 3-5 miles easily. Note - I never have had an issue with asthma while on an erg or on the water. This is my sixth year competitively rowing (collegiate level now) and while I don't get the chance to run, when I do it's very easy and I have zero complications from asthma (10+ miles, up steep hills, whatever).

I'm not well versed in respiratory physiology and medicine, but perhaps the limitation of when you breathe while rowing is what helps asthmatics. You inhale during one part of the stroke and exhale at another - a very patterned deep breathing. At very high intensities you may breathe in twice per stroke, but still with the same pattern. With running, one can get away with shallow breaths and that is typically bad for asthmatics (I've heard that one way to help asthma is to force yourself to take lots of deep breaths just when sitting around).

Finally, I used to have serious respiratory issues when I came down with a cold. Byproduct of the asthma most likely. Now - nothing. So I would highly recommend rowing to you based off my experiences.
