Sorry to bump up an old post...my back pain adventure ended up as a microdiscetomy at L5/S1 last December. With the help of PT I've recovered very well, and I have a new exercise habit to follow for the rest of my life.

I gave up rowing on the advice of my doctors, and sold my erg, but I really miss it!!! I can do some running, and use an eliptical on days I don't run, but that's a poor substitute for rowing.

I had the same situation. It was so bad that when i got out of the boat,my legs were so numb i collapsed onto the deck.It took me a minute or to two to get my feeling back into my legs after stretching the left and right piriformis.

MRI conclusion, both hips with labral tears, especially on one side. The loose material was pinching my siatic nerve.i had orthoscopic surgery to remove the tears which cleared up the problem.

I switched to a ART acitive release technique it is the only way to go! I am doing fine!

My recommendation is to find out what is your underlying problem with the siatic nerve,I certainly found out about mine and got treated.i didn't even know it was torn, that's all it took.

Good luck
