Another Heart Rate Question

Post by martyimr » April 5th, 2007, 2:06 pm

I'm a 59 year old guy, 185# 5'10" reasonably fit. Treadmill, bike and other cardio exercises generates max HB of 150-155. Doctor says I'm ok and encourages me to loose 10#.

So I just bought a Concept2. Starting to enjoy the 2,000M, finishing with times around 9min:30sec. Today I hit 172bpm as I came down the finishing streach shooting for 9:15! However, I do feel fine and actually quite accomplished.

I believe hard work generates the greatest return, however, I really do not want my wife to find me passed out.

Should I back off? Opinions, please.

Martyimr,

I was (height, weight, except 3 years younger) a year ago. worked out at the gym, erged, rowed on the water 2-3 times a week. Weight was stable for about 3-4 years 183-188 range. But...I've lost 12 lbs. in past 9 months, stepping up the intensity and time of workouts and backing away from bingeing all my calories in the evening. I don't have a heart rate monitor, though tooling the thought in my mind recently. So while I do longer erg pieces at 75-80% effort, I've paid close attention to my warmup and cooldown times. My warmups start out nice and slow with a gradual pickup in rating but not necessarily in intensity. Cooldowns gradually drop both intensity and rating so that I finish the last 2 minutes more paddling than stroking in intensity at a 14-16 rating. And I've increased the rest time between intervals from 1:1 to 1.5/2:1 depending upon the distance, not all my rest is active rest. I think that helps from over exertion. But search the threads in th eforum and find out how others who use heartmontiors exclusively to gage their workouts set them up and determine their proper level. 220-age isn't the right formula for everyone.
