where'd my calves go?

Post by scribewicz » December 29th, 2006, 9:47 pm

Greetings!

Just joined the forum and just started indoor rowing a few weeks ago. I started rowing on the water in June of this year and logged about 200 miles on the river this summer.

I used to run to keep in shape and have noticed this fall that my calves have shrunk in size! :? My quads are noticably bigger but I find that my calves burn running up a few flights of stairs and are looking kind of scrawny!

Anybody else see this after switching from running to rowing?

peace, Steve

I doubt they got smaller, but just look smaller compared to your now larger quads. As for them now burning when you are doing stairs, that might just be because they aren't in the same shape as before, although I doubt you lost muscle mass.

Include some running in your training plan. My best rowing years included it.

IMHO rowing does not help the calves much, but the cross-training benefit from running may give you an edge. And if you like to run, then definitely don't stop.
Do your warm-ups, and cooldown, its not for you, its for your heart ! Live long, and row forever !

Yes, that happened to me too.

Running plenty of hills helps to keep them and the rest of the legs in good shape.
