I'm not some one who goes to a doctor!
No problems whilst rowing!
But when I raise my right arm I experience pain im my right shoulder,
Making a crucifix is very painfull,
Not the arm, just the shoulder, rest won't help.
any thoughts?
thanks and regards

Do you have a desk job? Do you sit in front of a computer all day? Could the pain be related to using the mouse, and/or otherwise related to bad ergonomics in your work space?
I had a similar problem a couple of years ago, eventually diagnosed as an impingement of a nerve in the shoulder. Not sure what caused mine, but I suspect my work setup and/or I was playing competive volleyball at the time, and volleyball can be tough on the shoulders, with lots of explosive and repetitive motions.
Rowing was not really a big problem, but I did take a couple of months off, did physical therapy, and worked back into rowing over the next year or so. It took a long time and was pretty hard to shake. The sooner you get working on it the better too, in order to minimize damage or scar tissue in the joint. (at least according to my physical therapists).

Frozen Shoulder
Other than an overuse injury, or something traumatic, I couldn't guess. Has anything changed recently?
As an aside, a disease common among older women and diabetics, from which I suffered from a few years ago, is frozen shoulder; it also has another name, but it has slipped my mind. I had dropped weight lifting, but went back after a few days, and found I was having problems with some lifts, essentially anything requiring that I raise my shoulders. The problem became progressively worse, and although I saw two doctors, none had a real cure. I had read that the disease commonly went away after two years, and after suffering for about 1.5 years, the problem dissipated.

Shoulder Pain
Hi Tyn,
Unfortunately, you could have a small rotator cuff tear. I had the identical symptoms beginning about April of last year which became progressively worse. Lifting anything overhead(even hanging up an overcoat in the closet) became very difficult, as did chest presses. Even bicep curls caused pain.
Finally saw the orthopedist in early February of this year and had surgery this past March. I am now doing great, and while I will not work out with heavy weights again, keeping toned at my age (perhaps any age is more important, I feel great AND rowing on the erg is no problem at all.
Please note that often times physical therapy will help as small rotator tears sometimes heal themselves with careful use. Please have a doctor examine you ASAP.
Best of luck.

Thank you Guys!,
No deskjob, no dramatic changes?
BTW I didn;t know I had a rotator cuff, even two, Sounds great, but I had to look it up to understand what it is exactly!
I remember seeing it on the forum, but not sure which one.
Rereasding your posts, made me think about bad ergonomics. I'm behind a computer about 2 hours a day.
I will start changing the way I sit and move behind the computer.
See a doctor, I'll think that one!
Again many thanks!!

I had the same problem
I had and still have a problem with my shoulders. It hurt to move my shoulds almost felt like a dislocated shoulder. So I went to physio and they said that i had an overused rotator cuff. This was knotting up and all that jazz. He said that the problem was that my chest was stronger than my back so it pulled my shoulders forward causing my rotator cuff to overwork. It went away, or so i thought. now however it isnt sore or stiff. Now if i sit still for any amount of time my shoulders get pins and needles and i have a knotted muscle where i had the problem before. SO i think i might go see physio again.
Probable ways
Activities which require the involvement of the shoulder can make the shoulder hurt if the act is repeated. These are a common occurence for those who are in some kind of sporting events. Commonly this is referred to as the rotator cuff injury. Well if you dont like to visit a doctor then I guess you have to seek an appointment with the physical therapist who can help you learn some specific workouts which can help control the pain in the shoulder. But I am afraid if the problem still recurs then you might require to have an injection to allievate the pain.

Tyn,
I can get a sore shoulder and wrist by using the mouse in the standard way. My solution has been to put a tray or piece of plywood in my lap with a mouse pad on it and use it that way. It allows a more relaxed shoulder and wrist.
When the shoulder has been hurting I've managed to keep it tolerable by doing some rotater cuff exercises that I found using google.

I've got a similar problem, my left shoulder has similar symptoms for a month now, and I am betting 99% it is an impinged or torn rotator cuff.
Unfortunately telling the difference between torn or swollen is not easy, but the treatment is. Swollen usually only needs rest and physio, a tear often requires surgery.
I have to wait until 2007 before I can go see a doctor about it (all has to do with health insurance excess). Good thing is, rowing is not painful and does not appear to be aggravating the injury (although possibly is).

Just to say that Erging and Golf do not hurt my shoulders, however trying to put on a jacket or pullover is excruciating or sleeping on my side with arm under the pillow or at too tight an angle. No pushups or pectoral exercises either, as they are torture.
I have had an MRI and Ultrasonic exam. The result is that I have calcium deposits, cysts, old injuries (I was a competitive swimmer) and possibly tears/rips/lesions/wear in both shoulders so extreme that the doc says conservative treatment will not suffice.
They will do surgery on my right shoulder on 13 Feb and 4-6 weeks later the left. I also have a plum sized fat lipoma on the right shoulder which they will also remove.
