I agree that a pinch collar would work better, especially for a larger dog like yours. It reminds the puppy of a mother's nip if they're doing something bad, doesn't really hurt (was demonstrated on our arms) and we still use it on our five year old, 100 lb. "puppy"!
Regarding ice v. heat. I heard that ice is good to use for about the first 24 - 48 hours when the inflammation is the issue, and possibly before and after you walk the dog if he's been pulling. Once inflammation is under control, then heat works to loosen the muscle and promote healing. Either one I don't think should be left on for longer than 10 minutes at a time, once an hour at the most.
