Rowing with a big toe injury?

Post by Darks » January 21st, 2024, 7:00 am

Hi there,

I'm 33, been running all my life for general fitness. Lately I've had to scale back however, due toe a big toe injury (hallux rigidis - stiff toe joint). I'm still in between doctors appointments to see if there's anything to be done about it. In the meantime I've been on the look-out for a toe-friendly alternative to stay fit. Years ago, I was a big fan of the concept 2 rowing machine in the local gym. So this is the product I've been looking into buying for my new home-gym setup. But I worry how much the 'push-off leg movement' wil have an impact on my injured toe. I've simulated a few strokes, seems pretty ok, but I'm worried about longer term use. I've been looking into the Bikeerg as an alternative. But since I'm cycling to work every day I still think rowing is the better added workout, if it's ok for me.

So if anyone has experience with rowing and foot/toe injuries, please fill me in!

Big thanks

I've not ever injured my toe(s) but as you're pushing off through the ball of your foot I'd assume you're going to be alright with rowing.

It might be a good thing too, as it will further reinforce a good technique BUT, please be aware my comment is not based on medical expertise in any way.

I’m almost twice your age and on occasion have felt some stiffness in my big toe. 5 day a week rower. It has never hindered my rowing and if anything it feels better afterwards. Hope you enjoy your new erg!

Hi,

I know you've already ordered your Concept2, and maybe you're already enjoying it, but thought I'd share my experience with hallux rigidis and rowing ... it's all good :)

I started suffering from big toe problems several years ago, also due to excessive running, which put me out of action for several months. So I had an operation which cleaned out the joint somewhat, and got back to running. But after a year I started suffering again, and I am now back to limiting my running, so took up rowing. I do about 100km of rowing a month, and have never had any issues with my toe, whereas if I up the running even slightly I start to struggle quite quickly. I tend to row in cycling shoes which have a hard, flat sole to encourage me to keep my feet in contact with the foot plate and reduce movement that could possibly aggravate my toe.

Good luck, and enjoy your new erg!
