Erging after knee replacement

Post by Roger Ramjet » May 24th, 2020, 9:51 pm

Going in next week for a total knee replacement. What experience Do you have and expectations can I have? My typical month is about 60k as I also mix in some biking and swimming. Thanks for your guidance.

I haven't had one (yet) but have seen some back on the erg pretty quickly and effectively although I suspect never as strong. The rower is a great exercise for those of us with bad knees (as you know) but there is a real limitation on how far forward you can go at the catch. I saw a guy do a very fast 500 about 12 weeks post op but that is easier because you can shorten effectively by going faster on the stroke.
I'm waiting until "they" improve the design to allow for a greater angle of flexion - bespoke titanium 3D printing is on its way I understand.
Best of luck - it will sure help your rehab.

In 2010 I had a double knee replacement. I knew that they were shot so I did them both before they downgraded our health insurance at work.
After about 2 months I was feeling good enough to try to go sculling again. On my first stroke I came halfway up the slide and hit a brick wall, could not get past that. I knew then that unless I improved my range of motion I would never row again. A situation that was unacceptable. So I bought an ERG from Concept 2 and started to work on it , not for speed but simply to increase that ROM. Slowly I could get farther and farther up the slide, which hurt at first but was worth some pain. After working on the ERG and six months after the surgery I tried to row again and I could now move far enough to pull a stroke and now I am back to rowing 70 or 80 times a season and ERG in the winter.
Yeah so get on an ERG after your surgery and hit it, just don't expect that 6:15 2K too soon

Update. A little over three weeks post surgery I got on the erg today for an easy 2000 meters. I have been aggressive with the PT and exceeding the targets. Knocked the drag factor back to 110 and kept a smooth 20 spm pace. Decided it would be best to go strapless. All went well and I can tell this will help with the range of motion and regaining the strength in my quad.
