+1 on Endurerow but pricey. Sore-No-More sorbothane pad does the job. <50$.

I had similar problems. I do have fairly strong glutes too, but as a new rower, my ass was raw (perhaps bad form or too much lean back). I'm not sure what was causing it but I bought the Swoosh pad you mentioned. It's great. Still had issues with chaffing / rubbing though. Bought a product that biker's use a lot - called Chamois Butt'r. It's about $10 a tube and eliminated all the chaffing immediately (first time). No problems now. One tube would last you six months probably too. It depends on if your pain is coming from rubbing though or overuse.

I'm new to the rower game. After 300,000 meters, I thought I had figured out where all the sores could develop but after a rowing class last week, I developed two sore red spots at the top of my butt, I'm sure you people all know the spot. I believe the sore spots developed during the layback phase of rowing, and are from where my shorts rub.

I've been wearing UnderArmour compression shorts but those don't have any sort of padding. So, I have ordered a couple of pairs of rower trous (sp?) from JL Designs. I have also ordered a rowing pad from rower pad.com. Besides that, I have taken to use Glide and vaseline on those spots in order to make it through my workouts. It's still sore back there though.

Any thoughts? I certainly don't want to develop some sort of infection. When I hopped in the shower after that workout, I thought my butt was on fire.

Larryrow, I've answered this question several times down through the years. The sores near your tail bone have nothing to do with padding. It is the fact the seat rubs back and forth there. The only solution, and I repeat the only solution, is to get a hardish foam pad that is about 1.5in thick, cut it the same size as the seat, and cut out a generous "U" shape at the back of the foam which keeps your butt entirely off of the seat. The sores will disappear immediately. Thick shorts are not needed. I wear thin bike shorts. If I don't use the pad, bad sores develop very quickly. Some people just do not have this issue, so they are of no help to you.

Thanks for the tips! Could you look at the pad on rowingpad.com, the pad with two holes, and tell me if that is the shape you mean?

I tried the new shorts from JL Designs along with Glide and Vaseline and made it through 12,000 meters in class tonight without causing more damage, so I think my measures helped. I brought along the rowing pad but felt it was putting too much pressure in my sore area, so I did not use it.

It's all a one big experiment.

NO. What I describe is not for sale. Please reread my post. There is no mention of two holes or anything else like that. If your problem is gone, forget my suggestion. However, I've had positive feedback from a handful of ergers.

Any chance you could post a picture of your cushion? I'm not sure my problem is sorted, it is too early to tell.

I've used a Concept 2 many times before at the gym, but just bought my own. Never noticed before but I now feel discomfort at the bony protrusions of the hip which come in contact w/the seat after only 15 mins of rowing.

I'm going to investigate the various suggestions already posted in this thread, but I just thought that I'd mention that, in desperation, I actually used a fabric filled pillow to sit on which actually worked to relieve the discomfort. I don't consider it a permanent solution but it's going to have to do for now. LOL!!!

I bought a none C2 cushion pad from a company on ebay for £5 GBP. It's the exact same design as the C2 ones though!!!

It's really comfy even after 40-60 minute continuous sessions :)

My sore butt problem has been solved by buying real rowing shorts from JL Racing. I also use a little Glide back there.

I prefer the ones with the DryWick fabric, $34.95, rather than the polypro-whatever fabric for $36.95 but both are good.

I bought a pad but found that it puts too much pressure on sensitive areas.

I've done 14,000m workouts at the rowing club in my new rowing shorts without tearing myself up.

All of my UnderArmour shorts are going on eBay.

After scanning through this thread and trying to find other alternatives on the Net, this seems like the best bet, so I ordered one. Comes w/a 30 day $ back guarantee. So, I'm just out return shipping if I don't like it. Will post an update of my experience w/it after I receive/install it.

I started rowing wearing compression shorts, which worked fine until I started adding more meters. Started getting terrible chaffing and soreness.

Have discovered a much better option for me is to wear two layers: normal cotton undies and woven nylon shorts (like short basketball shorts) over the top.

I wouldn't wear cotton for running etc but for this it just plain works.

I received the EndureRow seat a few days ago and have done 3 5km workouts on it.

The holes in the seat help "some" w/the soreness I feel at the tips of the hip bones that contact the seat. I'm slow, so it takes me about 25-26 mins to do the 5km and I still start feeling discomfort around the 15 min mark (as it did w/the stock seat) but I don't feel as compelled to stop to relieve the soreness as I do w/the stock seat. I wore UnderArmor compression pants alone for the 1st 2 workouts. I added a pair of gel lined compression bike shorts for the 3rd workout but the gel liner did not seem to help very much.

I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the EndureSeat or not. Have 30 days to decide. I think it would help if I could "customize" the EndureSeat by reshaping the holes to better fit my butt but can't do that w/o voiding the return privilege.
