Separated Shoulder

Post by Shurla5 » April 6th, 2015, 12:05 pm

So I separated my shoulder on the 30th of March. I haven't rowed since but wondering how long before I can get back to rowing? the Doctor told me to wear my sling another week and come back to him so he can see what my range of motion is for my shoulder. I can tell its getting better but there are some ways I move it that hurts pretty bad still. Wondering if I start rowing, as much as I can tolerate if it will injure my shoulder worse?

It would probably depend on how your shoulder originally separated. If the rowing motion is putting strain in the same direction as the original separation then you should probably be more cautious in returning to action.

I injured my shoulders in different sporting incidents, and occasionally dislocate them if I try and catch a ball at full upward extension, or throw a ball very hard. I normally take a few days off until things feel a little better, and then resume rowing. I pay attention to the feeling coming from the injured shoulder, but with proper technique it doesn't feel at risk of separating. Sometimes when my technique gets a little sloppy it feels like the joint might be stretching too far, but paying more attention to the arm angle seems to make it feel better.

Cheers

My should has been doing great until a couple weeks ago. not sure what I did but I can definitely feel aches and soreness when I wear my backpack on the injured shoulder. Otherwise it's doing pretty good, thanks for asking. Sorry it took me so long to respond, I didn't get notification of your post.
