Sore Ribs

Post by army padre » August 26th, 2011, 3:25 pm

Greetings everyone! I'm a 49-year-old Army Chaplain, 5'6", 160, and I have 1.6 million meters in the books. I'm about five weeks into the UK weight loss program (six days a week). The AT workouts leave me with a very sore rib cage--especially on the left side. At the present time I don't have the means to take a video of myself, but I'm sure my form leaves much to be desired. I developed this problem once before using the Pete Plan when doing the "faster" workouts. Has anyone else ever suffered from a sore rib cage?

When i was younger, i hurt my ribs by leg pressing. I let my thighs come down way too far and it put pressure on my ribs.
I am guessing this may almost the same problem you have. I'm guessing 'the faster workouts' may have cause your upper torso (ribs) to slam against your left thigh area at the catch
The soreness will fade, ice it down.

Im sure the more experienced rowers will know more than me. i'm still a noob

There are two main rowing related injuries that cause rib cage pain. One is a strain or tear in the intercostal muscles, the other is a hairline fracture in one or more ribs. Both are caused by the pressure of the rowing stroke.

If the pain is severe, especially if it keeps you up at night or is a problem in everyday life, get it checked out by a doctor. Otherwise, lay off the fast stuff for a couple weeks to let the strain heal.

I cracked a couple of ribs last year, it was not fun.

I had some sever soreness following physical therapy (for a back issue) in the intercoastal area of my right side but this went away in a couple of weeks. I thought I had broke a rib or two. My rib joints needed to be more mobile than they were and the therapy helped break them free to move much better, never realizing that the ribs had joints just not in the normal sense!! :o Being 60 years old and very inactive for the past few decades before taking up rowing a little over two years ago allowed those ribs joints to become fixed.
