My tips:

- TV & DVD player (to watch sports, movies, whatever). Marthon is a mind game. Got to fool the mind.
- Music (i often listen to music loud and watch soccer games).
- Drinks. very important for me. I drink a couple of swigs of water every 30 minutes in first hour. A couple of swigs of Gatorade/Sugary Sports Drink every 15 minutes in second hour, then I finish off a De-fizzed Coke (caffine + sugar) by swigging every 15 minutes in third hour. I don't drink a lot each time, but do drink frequently.
- RowPro with pace boat (see: www.digitalrowing.com)

Good luck.

w00t!
:!:

It's a long weekend up here in Cunuckleheadville, so I might go for a Full Marathon. Then I can get a C2 Marathon Mug and have a few celebratory beverages in it after it arrives.
:D

Thanks! I did it shortly after my previous post, in the middle of May. It just took the mug a while to get across the border. The government of Canada has to check everything closely for taxability before sending it on to their bankrolling citizens. They wouldn't want to give up a first class ticket or a steak dinner. It made it here with no charge to me, but it looks like the shipping cost C2 a pretty penny.

It looks like I've got a stronghold on last place in the FM standings. The FM turned into a real mental (as well as physical) battle for me because my finishing time just kept pushing back and back while I was planning on doing it in 30 minutes less than it took me. Part of me kept saying, "you suck, just quit!" and another part kept saying, "don't quit just because you suck, keep going and get that damn mug!"
Cheers,
Slippy :-)

The marathon

Post by Cazneau » August 16th, 2008, 7:17 pm

Well, the mug would be cool to have, but I just don't think I could get motivated to spend that much time on a machine--in the exact same place you started. Don't get me wrong--love my rower, especially when the weather outside is crappy. But if I'm going for endurance events, I'd prefer to move across the landscape in a running marathon, or a metric century bike ride.

It's a mental thing. It's easy for me, because I'm mental.

Oh dear, I've rowed four marathons, what does that make me. I've only got three mugs - they are seriously cool.

Although that's not as mad as Yankeerunner, IIRC Rick rowed six in six weeks this year.

Jack Nicholson in a couple of different roles comes to mind...

Haha. I actually did 8 in 8 weeks, starting with a 3:02.16.5 on March 2nd and improving a bit each week until finishing up with a 2:48:53.6 on April 21st. I can kick Jack Nicholson's butt in erg marathons. I suspect that Jack wouldn't care even if I begged him to.

The thing I found out was I felt like I was low on sugar after an hour. Make sure the rooms not too hot cause that affects you a lot. There's nothing to be scared of if you're not going all out. I put a small towel on the seat for padding, it helps. You'll regain a lot of comfort from cycling your effort, slow > faster > slower just to help the cramp in the joints. Its mainly a mental thing, so I always focused on the next 1 000m, that takes your focus off the end post. I notice if I think through a problem unrelated to rowing time really flies. Also play around with the PM3, check the Calories consumed, the Force curve, your 500m ave time etc. I just jab a button with my thumb at the catch.

Any pain you feel during the row will be less than the joy of finishing !

Good luck, you CAN make it.

Ray

Marathon

Post by jascox2 » April 11th, 2009, 11:14 pm

My advice is just get stuck in. Go at the same pace for a half marathon, have lots of water , juices on hand.

i went in to do my first half marathon, and just kept on going and completed the full. Problems i had were most of which hit around 35000m (and i didnt stop once, as i thought this would not represent a row on water), and the fixes for next are....

-Butt hurts : Suck it up, shuffle around
-Grip on hands wet: have a towel handy
-Shins are burning : this may be unavoidable
-Motivation: get some good music, save the best for the last hour
-Nipple rash: bandaids
-Beam burn: my calf was brushing the beam, after 3hrs this was raw, maybe vasaline.

Just go for it.
J.
