I already have a model D rower with PM5 and considering picking up a used Ski Erg model 1 for $400.
Supposedly, it was bought new, the owner used it a few months before getting deployed and then it sat in storage with minimal use. It has a PM3 and the old style handles; so I know the monitor won't be as user friendly but are the old style handles not comfortable. Are the PM and old style handles perfectly fine or I should factor in the cost of retrofitting it with the newer style?
Should I pass on this and wait for a deal for a model 2 to come up, possibly paying 300-400 more?

PM3 monitor will suffice in the meantime. Try it and see how you get on with it. You can always upgrade in the future.
Handles! I had a Model 1 and found the handles with the webbing wrist strap weird and couldn’t get on with it like that. I changed the straps for a pair of LEKI Nordic Walking Pole straps and this did the trick.
At the price you are getting the machine for, I’d buy it and try it rather than wait. Again you can always sell the Model 1 and upgrade later
