Skierg Marathon

Post by Steve W » April 3rd, 2017, 11:39 pm

For rowing it seems common but have not seen much discussion on anyone doing a skierg marathon. Anyone done one? Times, experiences? Thinking of attempting this to start off the upcoming season. If you have to ask why... :D

Just what I needed! Thanks much, Richard.

Not too many, looks like an opportunity to 'win' the race for oldest and slowest :D .

during the last crazybear challenge, Jen Howse ( F38 LWT) did a few - even went out and did a 100k.
mind you she is from yorkshire, so that takes part of the crazy thing then...

And done! That was one long ski-erg session :o . On the plus side, no sore butt from sitting  . Good luck to ski-erger's for a successful 2017-18 season.

Well done Steve, very impressive time.

I got really into the skierg when I had a few back issues and couldn't really use the erg. I managed to get to 10k but a full marathon might be an option for the New Year after I complete my charity erg challenge.

Well done on the marathon, Steve!

Did you use gloves?

Furthest I've ever done is 35000m last year. Would like to hit a marathon in the autumn when it's cooler.

Last two ski sessions:

Tuesday
48 mins @ 1:55.9 r31

Thursday
12x125m/1:00r @ 1:29.0 r51

Building towards 1 hour in 3 minute increments and getting faster for longer with each session. Hope to be a bit under 1:55 when I get to the full 60 minutes.

Thanks, Dangerscouse. Besides wanting variation in workouts, I also have nagging lower back issues. Certainly have been days that I could not row on the erg but was good to skierg. Length of time was a little mind-numbing, otherwise would rate the skierg marathon a little easier in comparison to my erg marathon. 5k splits were faster with every split, so pacing was spot on.

Weight-wise, am down to 60kg and have no torque but plenty of endurance. Have a history of ultramarathons / cycling, triathlons, etc. Wish you the best in your upcoming charity erg challenge effort and will follow. Jealous of your and others faster skierg times posted here!

CaseyClarke,

Yes, gloves helped. Hands have the requisite callouses from ergingerging / skierging but usually use gloves for workouts longer than one hour. Also used lube (Vaseline) to avoid hotspots.

Can easily see you, HJS, Dangerscouse & others kicking my tail in a skierg marathon effort. At 35k, your next step is to finish out the marathon distance. Great work and look forward to reading about your progress and success.

Steve, if I'm anywhere close to your fitness levels at your age I'll be a very happy man. I'm 43 and your times and commitment are impressive for any age.

This 12 hour ultra marathon on the erg is really starting to become daunting now. I was fleetingly considering 6 hours erg and 6 hours skierg just to mix it up a bit but logistically it was an issue to sort out at the gym so I'll just be erging.

Steve, no marathons from me, not on both erg. Not a natural endurance man and does also not fit in my general training. Both really long and short stuff is to specialised for me.

HJS; Understand and appreciate where your coming from. Quick story...Remember a cyclist / runner who described although liking both sports, described being a middle distance guy who didn't do heat, extreme terrain or long distances due to stockier build and poor performance in those environments. Trained with him, he ended up running Pikes Peak Marathon, Ironman Hawaii and BAM, a continuous 585 mile bike race designed in hell. He completed a 63 mile canoe race just yesterday.

I'm not saying this to convert you or anyone. Quite the opposite, I'm in awe and have a great respect of your abilities, strength and sound advice. Look toward your posts to learn and grow in my erging. If at some point you decided to go after a marathon / long distance goal (not sure you haven't already), would put money down that you'd blow it away.

Casey, I've just realised what your splits are...1'55.9???!!! That is very impressive. I got down to 2'00.4 for 10km and I thought I was going some.

Who knows, but running for me is out, haven,t ran for over 20 years, reason is a chronic back problem. Which can,t be fixed.
Strenghtwork I can do, also with some trouble. I don,t see myself stop doing those.

Cheers.

Still a way off my best. Last year I was building towards a marathon and got as far as 35000m @ 1:56.5 pace.

I hold a few British Records in the 30-39 category.

I'm improving again and hope to be back at that level in the mid autumn. Should only be two weeks off a 1:55 ish pace for 60 minutes currently.
