I use that exact set up to train upper body for XC skiing. The tubing I use has loops on the end as opposed to handles so I can get more of a ski pole grip. It works just fine. I usually go for time, e.g., 10 minutes using a relatively light resistance. I combine this with some inline roller skating during the summer for a decent ski specific workout (I prefer the skate technique over the classic technique).

I like the SkiErg and think it would be great to have but not in the budget at the moment.
