Lightweight/Heavyweight rankings needed

Post by kini62 » February 20th, 2018, 4:25 pm

I know there's not a lot of people yet ranking with the Skierg but after having and using mine for the last week it's clear to me that being bigger, heavier, larger is even more of an advantage for the Skierg.

Height as with the rower is also advantageous but upper body size seems to make the greatest difference as the driver portion is entirely upper body.
59m, 5'6" 160lbs, rowing and skiing (pseudo) on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Yes, the skierg weight and height advantage appears to be even greater than it is with the C2 rowing machine.
Figuring out who's a lightweight appears to not be possible, but clicking the person's name, and then their profile,
usually shows their height and weight, which is tedious but helpful. Hopefully C2 will soon add the lightweight division.

In the meantime, adding stats to signatures can be helpful, and perhaps a thread or two can be started for lightweights.

The average international Nordic cross country skier is 5‘9“ tall and 165 pounds. Based on this, there should be slightly more men at the top of the Skierg rankings weighing 165 or less, than for those over 165 pounds.

To verify this, I looked for lightweights in the 2018 rankings, which turned it to be quite a tedious process. I started with the 100 meters, as that’s the easiest event to use an all out effort to get a best time, and it is a popular event, in order to have an accurate comparison.

The men with the fastest 4 times were quite heavy, averaging over 350 pounds.

The 1st lightweight in the 100 meters for 2018 was only 84th place overall.  The second lightweight tied for 91st to 98th place. These were the only 2 lightweights in the top 100 times.

Times for the second lightweight and second heavyweight were 17.0 and 13.7 (a tie), a difference of 24 percent. Considering the top 165 pound men are in much better condition for skiing than those weighing 350 pounds, the gap in times due to weight is actually much greater.

The difference in Concept2 rowing division records is only 6.2 percent difference for the 2k.

Nordic cross country skiing doesn't have weight divisions, as skiers all carry their own body weight over distance.  But Skierg times don’t account for body weight, which makes additional weight a huge advantage. The Skierg is like a weightlifting machine, where a weight is lifted from the ground, by pulling down on the cords. The heavier the person, the easier it is to pull down the weight.

Based on the ranking results, heavyweights have 4 times the advantage in the Skierg rankings compared to the Rowerg, solely due to body weight differences, which is why at least a 165 pound lightweight division is needed.

Only looking at 100m times is very limited, 100m is 90% raw strenght, conditioning is not important.

If you looked at longer distances all those heavy strenghtguys would be gone.

350 lbs? Only Eddy Hall is that heavy, even 400 at his peak, and as Wr deadlift (straps) and strenghtathlete a big time ped user, which is alowed over there.
Phil Clap, is much more alround, still heavy but most tall 2.06, but certainly not 350 lbs, 280/90. Wr 2k guy among other stuff.

Still think the skierg has not so much to do with on snow skieng, the leg movement is simple missing. Don,t know but I don,t expect olympic skiers use this machine often, like rowers do use the ergos. The rowing motion is much more alike.

My rankings for my age and weight on the erg has most of my times around the 75th percentile with the shorter distances closer to 50th percentile.

On the skierg in down under 20th percentile for everything. The skierg favors heavy and tall much more so than does the erg.

reason is crossfit, they use the skierg, rowers are much average guys. Crossfitters are bigger stronger. There are fast lighter guys. What about the 16 min 5k wr on the skierg. Not a big guy, but a real skier. Simply monster fit.
