No swimmers?

I am sorta surprised there haven't been any posts cross-training with swimming. I am 66 y.o., 5'11", 176 lb. (80 kg). I've been swimming most of my life (my Dad said I was born wet), including Master's swimming. So far, I have found that my 6 weeks on the C2 have increased the power in my swimming stroke as well as helped endurance.

On the C2, my 500/splits are around 2:20, best 2K so far about 8:50. Swimming times (distance) haven't changed too much from my 30's, but I think they should be going down with the cross-training.

Any other swimmers out there? Particularly old farts like me.

I swim freestyle, when the water's warm enough. Don't like pools, too much allergens in the water.

If I keep fit on the erg, then when I go seaside I can usually swim a mile or so within a week.

A few years ago I could maintain 3 km/hour in the water, 10 km/h sculling and 13 km/h erging. All fading fast now.

I'm not old but since my fibre intake has increased recently, I'm doing the farting bit as well as ever.

I'm lucky enough to live near Kitsilano Pool (a 137-metre outdoor salt-water pool) here in Vancouver, so I swim in there when it opens for four summer months. The length of the pool makes it a fun challenge and I can't complain at the nice sunburn I get!

I think the big thing from swimming, alongside the obvious of it being such a great cardio and all-over workout, is the increase in pain tolerance, which is great for rowing. (Note: http://www.runnersworld.com/sports-psyc ... -tolerance)

I'm a competitive masters swimmer and runner. I just got my C2 rower 3/17/2015 so it's too soon to get cross training results. I will post in about a month to let you know what help C2 has been in swimming and running. I am enjoying rowing and the rankings.

I agree that there is no a lot of information for swimmers. I am a masters swimmers that enjoys long distance open water swimming but in the process of trying to freshen up my training and results a bit.

I found this article quite good and helpful. I have been getting favourable results out of the C2 for my swimming even though I am spending less time in the pool.

Weather permitting, will participate in my first open water swim of the season tomorrow, the Swim the Sun race at Sunnen Lake in Potosi, Missouri. It's been awhile (three years?) but kind of like riding a bicycle, except you drown if you fail  . Erging has been a very good 'cross train' for swimming, hitting many of the same muscle groups. A few aches but more just getting the technique up to par again. I'm not a competitive swimmer but certainly don't anticipate failure!
The article about swimmers rowing was interesting. IMO, rowing is underrated & underappreciated in many respects. Will report back after the race.

Actually the swimming was very good cross training for the rower. I cannot swim to save myself however so I was using fins and on my back using no arms and doing 60 lengths of a 50m pool non stop in a bit over an hour, Legs get a massive workout with fins as the loading is higher and you have to crawl to the recovery hot pool as you have trouble walking ! highly recommended for anyone who finds their swimming too slow or cannot swim.

1st place overall male for the 1.1 mile distance. Was surprised and surely would have gotten a butt-kicken if I'd gone in one of the two longer races!
Looking forward to rowing rather than swimming this week :).
