Rowing to complement sailing

During the off-season (sailing) I have been following the Indoor Rowing Sailing Guide By Eddie Fletcher and have almost finished the 4 month program. Now I am wondering what rowing would be useful during the sailing season when I sail up to 4 times per week?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I remember reading a few years back about the America's Cup competitors using the erg for training. I complemented my bike racing with erg training. I've seen motocross riders using it. Etc.

The erg is a great training tool for endurance and overall body fitness. Use it in your regular fitness/strength routine - long steady, harder mid-length pieces, sprint intervals. It will all be good.

I wonder what fitness you need for sailing? Few years ago I saw a crew training for the Volvo ocean race. They also rowed some. I found their results very unimpressive. Young, big training for such a big event.

I now nothing about sailing and what you need or don,t need. Would think, the lenght of races is important.

Re training during your race season. I would say, don,t fully stop, keep doing a few sessions a week. Nothing difficult or long, but keep the rowing fitness you have going a bit. But keep the sessions easy enough, so it does not hinder your sailing.
