I'm glad to find this forum! Last week my new Concept2 arrived - I've used the rowing equipment at the gym as a warmup periodically, but it's too easy to make excuses to skip when you have to drive to the gym
There have been a few posts over the years from people who both climb and row, and I was wondering how you more experienced people are combining the two. I've been climbing not quite four years, at about an intermediate level (in the 5.10abcd range indoors with some longer multipitch outdoors). My own workouts prior to getting the rower have been three times weekly climbing (top rope and lead, a small amount of bouldering), once or twice strength training (mostly antagonist muscles). Now that it's colder I've substituted moderate to hard intervals on my elliptical for outdoor walking/hiking, roughly four times a week, 45 minutes or so. My thought going in is to swap out some elliptical time for 2-3 days of rowing, working up to longer sessions from the 10 minute warmups I'd been doing on climbing days.
Climbing - both plastic and rock - and rowing?

My serious rock climbing days are long behind me, but I still do some with my daughter occasionally. It's still fun, even as an old guy.
Not sure you can design a program on the erg that directly complements climbing, but just the aerobic workout will improve your endurance. I'd forget the elliptical and use the erg more - it's a way better workout. As far as erg workouts go there are plans designed to improve THAT, which will indirectly help your climbing. Here are a couple links (which show up here regularly):

Work on technique, which will maximize the workout you get in the shortest time, see technique videos on the C2 web page.
Good luck!

Mark Underwood. Rower first, cyclist too.
Re: Climbing - both plastic and rock - and rowing?
Thanks, Mark, that's very helpful. One of the things I like about climbing is that it's possible to start and enjoy it even in one's 50's, as I did
I appreciate the links, and am working on my intensity. Technique does seem to be the key to getting the most out of the rower.. Now that I've got one at home, I've switched my half of my warmup minutes to the ski-erg, at least for awhile, since so many people here mentioned it is complementary.
