Extension Press Ups

For a quick demonstration that you have the kind of exceptional full-body power that is important in rowing, I like extension press ups.

Can anyone out there do a quick 20?

If so, show off.

Post a video.

Quick 20?? I did a slow painful 2! Can anyone out there do this?

I do not think it is an indication of full body power but rather an indication of core strength

You need a lot more than just core strength to do a good batch of extension press ups.

As in rowing.

Here is a link to Ranger doing 10 extension push-ups:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gXLUl6x01w

added later: If you watch carefully, you can see some cheating. If you keep your elbows down and first raise your body, then once your body is raised straighten your arms, it becomes easier.

Here I am doing some planche push-ups. Just kidding. That's not me:

No, I am not leveraging off my elbows.

Sure, I can do 20, perhaps even 30.

Supposedly, 60-year-olds lose half of their full-body power.

Nope.

Not sure if he was cheating with his elbows - it was too difficult to tell, what with all the cheating by not lowering himself all the way down.

Now if it's full body strength I'd take something like this over an extension push-up. How much of this routine can you manage? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNw_6DnFJ90

did 4 to get the technique down, then did 2x5 with 30s in between. not easy at all, but doable. makes me realize how weak my lower back is.

and PaulH, that man should be a gymnast, that is incredible.

There's an old video of Jack Lalanne doing them, on fingertips. I can't post the youtube link here, but it's easy to find.

Good goin', Paul.

If you are rowing well (13 SPI for lightweights; 16 SPI for heavyweights), a good rowing stroke, it seems to me, is _very_ "gymnastic," especially the explosive, jackknife-like pry with the core, back, and calves, hanging on the handle, with your weight off the seat, in the center of the drive.

Not sure exactly, but just thinking about my own stroke, the hips can swing through an arc of as much 135 degrees.

To keep timing and sequencing in order, this expansive explosion with the hips needs to be done in just a bit over a tenth of a second.

Thousands of times, every two seconds or so.

I'm somewhat of a novice in terms of rowing, but exercise, especially strength exercises, I know well. Whatever Ranger is doing in that video is absolutely worthless. That's definitely not an extension pushup....hopefully his technique on other forms of exercise is better than that....otherwise, he's all about cheating. Now those planche pushups on the other hand, that's impressive!

Yea, I hear that rowing is "absolutely worthless" as a strength exercise, too.

Oh well.

I am just a 165 lb. weakling, anyway.

Light as a feather.

Skinny as a rail.

Sure, weak when compared to a 250lb football player, but pound for pound, lightweights have almost everyone beat :D

Quite the contrary, I think rowing might be the best kept secret out there. It seems that very few people give it any thought. I was guilty of that as well until 6 weeks ago. Now I'm hooked and loving it!

Jack Lalanne doing some straight arm on-the-fingertips push-ups. In the comments some people warn that attempting this could cause a lower back injury.
