Upper Back and Neck Pain

Post by keblmb » January 19th, 2009, 10:37 pm

I have recently started getting pain in my upper back and around my neck during and after erging. I have probably slipped into some bad technique, but can't figure it out. Any thoughts what could be casing this?

Thanks,
Keith

I tell you that is not much to go on. Are you tensed up afterwards. I use Yoga. It works for me.

Try keeping the monitor low with your eyes fixed on it, and pull at low ratings, not more than 22. If neck pain disappears, maybe it was due to resisting the inertial forces created when changing direction during the stroke. Heads are heavy and if you rate say 35, those forces will be high.

In any case keep it smooth, slow and relaxed, we don't want to generate forces that are not going into the handle.

Upper Back and Neck Pain

Post by keblmb » January 20th, 2009, 7:43 am

Sorry, I did not give you much information. I did the holiday challenge and it started towards the end of the 100K. I took some time off during the holidays to work it out. I did a real short piece a couple of weeks ago and the pain started right away. Yesterday, I seemed fine until I took the rating up, so I might try the lower ratings that are suggested.

I know my water coach says I need to loosen up my shoulders, so it might be related. I also took on a lot of new responsibilities at work, so I am probably more tense.

I have only been rowing a couple of years and reached out the coach the taught me erging, but have have not heard back.

Thanks,
Keith
