What makes you good on an erg?
What makes you good on an erg?
What seperates the ave from the good, the good from the great and the great from the best ?
Do you train to be the best you can be or train for fun?
Do you ever think I will never get beyond X?
Do you set realistic or unrealistic goals?
I did 6.50 for 2k last week, what can I achieve next week, next month?
Can I get under 6.15 by the 28th November?
Stats - 6'5" 110kg, good general fitness.
Thoughts?

You have a great build, if you have good fitness you should be a lot faster soon.
The key in training is doing enough volume. Its not short fast stuff but longer aerobic work that builds your base fitness.
A month ago the fm record was set in 142 pace. Thats roughly your 2k time, but 42 km long.... To give you an idea.
What makes you good on an erg?
WOW..who set that record? What age are they?

Mental toughness is a huge part of rowing, or any sport for that matter.

Re: What makes you good on an erg?
your stats remind me of Nik Fleming..long time great athlete, long time jokester....lol...if it is you, then I've watched you row over the years and to be fair, you're not too bad. you might make something of yourself one day if you keep at it..flemster6 wrote:What seperates the ave from the good, the good from the great and the great from the best ?

No info given on age and athletic background, very important to assess your question.flemster6 wrote:I did 6.50 for 2k last week, what can I achieve next week, next month?

Re: What makes you good on an erg?
CyclingMan Jim,
he's posting his workouts /athletic information sporadically, and on a couple different threads... making it kind of fun to figure things out.
I am pretty sure that he is Nik Fleming, just having a go, taking the pi55 .
if he isn't Nik Fleming, then it's bizarre that he's using a user name that may bring about that association. And his height/weight is close to Fleming's . so it may be one of those coincidences
in 2003 at age 34 Nik Fleming did a 5:54.9 . So in 2015, he would be 46. which is what he puts down at the bottom.
if it is Nik, then I remember his posts fondly from days long past. Always a great read and a pleasure to watch - he did make his rows look almost effortless.
Below is a post in another thread.
5km erg 17.44.6 1.46.4 r24 ave. HR 131
500m splits
1.45.4 25 120
1.45.6 24 126
1.45.9 24 130
1.46.1 24 132
1.46.6 24 133
1.46.9 24 135
1.47.5 25 134
1.48.6 24 133
1.47.8 25 135
1.44.1 27 140
9mile run 1.16.31 ave. HR 138
mile splits / HR
8.40.63 117
8.22.43 131
8.48.94 137 (slow mile + 20secs due to opening / closing 3 gates!!)
8.32.15 140
8.23.64 141
8.23.67 142
8.18.20 144
8.36.02 147
8.25.79 149
So I was able to sustain a higher HR for a longer period of time during the run.
My training during the last few months has been predominantly running.
Im 46, 110kg 195cm

Re: What makes you good on an erg?
All of this makes the original post pretty bizarre. A former 5:54 2Ker wondering how to get to get to 6:15 and wondering how rowers are separated. I think there must be a good of the pulling of the old leg here.

Yes. markinnb pointed out that he was noted for taking the pi55, as the Brits put it.Cyclingman1 wrote:All of this makes the original post pretty bizarre. Check out the famous duel he had with Graham Benton, the Beast vs. the Big Bird.

Also gives advice on interval rests over on the Pete thread. A master rower? For cat's sake, let's not get off on the wrong foot and have another Fred Dickie dust up!

Did you check out the duel I mentioned, Jack? It was a rally big deal in the UK. I believe that it was on the telly.jackarabit wrote:Also gives advice on interval rests over on the Pete thread. A master rower? For cat's sake, let's not get off on the wrong foot and have another Fred Dickie dust up!
