Heart rate on C2

Post by TheRocketeer » May 11th, 2015, 6:37 pm

What exactly is the C2 recording when it puts down heart rates for splits and workouts? Is it the average HR, max HR during that segment, max HR during a 5-second interval, or what? It's obviously not the minimum, but I can't figure it out.

I have wondered exactly the same thing and I had concluded that it is the HR at the end of the split / interval (which is generally also the max for me). Whereas spm for a split appears to be the average.

How do you get 5 second intervals?

I don't do 5-second intervals, but Trainingpeaks will tabulate the maximum heart rate sustained over a 5-second interval, which smooths out a spiky sensor. I don't know if this is what the PM3 is doing or not. Any ideas?

I am fairly sure that the monitor shows the HR at the end of each split or interval and that the HR recorded for the entire piece is the average of the split or interval values. That is consistent with the records of my own that I have checked. From what you said above, it apparently uses the last 5 seconds of each split to get the HR recorded for the split. If you use variable intervals, I have a hunch that it still does the same thing - just the last 5 seconds of each interval and that the overall is just an average of those numbers, not taking into account that the intervals are not all equal in length.

The splits logged in memory, logcard or USB stick have an instantaneous HR value from the end of the split.

If you need better data than those you should use some other way of recording HR, like a watch or a phone app or RowPro.

Gotcha.

Citroen, is Bob correct that the overall heart rate number is the average of the split HR numbers?

Yep. It's less than ideal, but that's how it's always worked for PM2/PM2+/PM3/PM4 & PM5.
