Natural pace?

If I just get on the erg with no specific pace in mind for any sort of time beyond 15 mins , I seem to settle into around 2.07/500 without thinking about it.

Very comfortable at this pace, but just dropping it down to 2.00 makes a big difference for heart/breathing etc.

Do others have a pace that their body seems to default to ?

Yes. Mine's about the same (2:07) at a rate of 20spm.

mine's about 2:00 at a 24. Which is pretty comfortable until I get over 45 min.

I'm with Nosmo. 1:59 to 2:00 and 23-24 SPM is my groove. I actually find it easier to go faster than that for short distances than to go slower for long periods. I do on occasion force myself to do power/technicque workouts where I pull the same pace but at 19-20 SPM.

I don't do long set pieces on the erg but of the few that I've done, I'll keep my splits at about 1:50 and let them slowly creep down to 1:56/7 which is where I find it easy to sit at - with a 20/2 stroke rate. On the water I can settle into something like this much easier.

I'm fascinated to read this. When I do long pieces I occasionally get back-ache between the shoulder blades, especially if I'm taking it gently. I think that this is because, at lower paces, I get a bit lazy with my posture. If I pick up both the pace and the stroke rate the back ache settles down.

Cheers

I also like to settle around 2:03/:05 for anything +20min but if for some reason i were do drop it down so say a 2:10+ i would also get back pain. i guess my body got used to one form and by increasing my rate would change my form slightly. :?
