mixing up training?

I'm new to rowing this term at college and in about 2 weeks of 2x2hr OTW outings (no ergs), have managed to bring my 2k from 7.32 to 7.28. We have 2 weeks until our qualification race for lent 'bumps' (a cambridge race). The guy who normally coaches us suggests we do regular 5ks but i've heard from another experienced member of the boat club that we're far better off doing 3 x 2k sessions a few times a week as this pace is more akin to what it will be like in the race.

what's the best course of action here? 2ks, 5ks, or mixing it up, and if so, why? (sorry for the constant questioning, i'm a newbie)

With only 2 weeks until your test, I'm not sure it matters whether you do 5ks or 3x2ks or both.

Perhaps most important at this point for a succesful test is to have a good idea of your likely 2k pace and make sure you don't start faster than your projected avg pace.
