Sore Knees???

Post by mtowngrandma » January 5th, 2007, 2:09 pm

53 yr old female with arthritic knees. I secured overwhelming approval from rheumatologist to row and after 4 months and 235,000 M, I've lost weight and inches. The knees have been feeling much better and doc says it is due to stronger quads. My legs are extremely long and strong. Now my knees are hurting after some workouts. My form appears to be good, matching C2 DVD and Xeno DVD. I try to visualize the "squeezing down" of legs and glutes and also tighten abs when driving back. Anybody have any ideas on what I might be doing incorrectly or any other contributing factors? Thanks, everybody.

mtowngrandma,

Congratulations on the weight loss, that will surely help your knees in the long run. As for the pain you are getting after some workouts, are you being careful not to go past shins parallel? You do not want your needs to be out in front of your ankles. If you are already doing this, you might try not going quite to shins parallel to see if that alleviates the pain.

I agree with Rich. My knees tend to complain if I compress too much at the catch.

I third that! I started having knee pain (just below knee toward inside). I thought I was using good form but moved an old mirror over next to my erg...and discovered I was going well past perpendicular. Watching form like a hawk, at the end of that 10k, no knee pain!! I keep the mirror there and keep an eye on form so I don't get sloppy and hurt myself again.

I had knee surgery 4 months ago and am back on the erg now. I can tell right away if I compress too much- it hurts.

I concentrate on keeping my knees in a straight line with my ankles, no bowing inward or outward. And keeping my abs tight seems to take some strain off my legs during the drive. Go figure.
