Heart rate monitors?

Post by joeevans8 » January 1st, 2007, 10:08 pm

What model of Polar do you reccomend? I like to run as well if that makes a difference; row on a Concept 2 with a PM3.
Thanks in advance

I have a Suunto T6 with BikePOD and FootPOD.

PM2/PM3/PM4s need a special dongle (costs £30 on my side of the Pond) to work with Polar heart rate monitors.

PM4 works wirelessly with Suunto digital heart rate monitors. (PM2/PM3 don't work with the digital Suunto monitors.)

The Concept 2 monitor will only display your heart rate when you have the receiver so I would recommend purchasing the heart rate monitor that has the running functions that you desire. Then you can purchase the concept 2 receiver for $25. Or if you only plan to use the HRM for rowing you can buy the receiver and chest strap from concept 2 for $65.

Altitude is right if you're talking about the Polar set-up (Dougie's post calls the "receiver" a "dongle".

However s/he is wrong about needing a "receiver" for the Suunto when used w/ the PM4. The PM4 incorporates the "receiver"...all that is needed is the chest strap (which C2 supplies along w/ the PM4). Then you can separately decide if there is a Suunto watch that you want to purchase. I also have the T6, but believe that the T4 and perhaps other watches will also display the heartrate when you're not rowing, as well as make data available for download and analysis in software supplied by Suunto.

The BikePOD & FootPOD are (separately purchased) devices which can collect additional data for incorporation into the software's analysis.

Good luck in deciding what's right for you!
