Why is AN not as fast as possible?

Post by jfo » November 27th, 2006, 10:23 am

Hi.
I am following the 'interactive program'.
Why is it that 'AN' times should be >= a value and not < the value?
I would have guessed that for instance 10x1 minute AN should be as fast as possible?

In the IA, < (less than) means slower, while > (greater than) means faster; i.e. the symbols refer to "speed" and not to pace in seconds.

You are certainly welcome to go "as fast as you can" for each rep, the only penalty for doing that is a wide range in average pace over the course of 10 x 1 minute sprints. And it probably hurts a bit more.

A rather challenging workout based on that sort of thing is the following.

Warm-up
Set up a Just Row piece, start and get the Avg Pace below WR for your age class (or a faster WR if that's too easy for you), keep going until the Avg Pace becomes slower than the WR Target Pace.
Rest until recovered
Repeat until you have had enough.
