Does anyone have suggestions for workouts or special tips for a first time competitor and best way to get ready for the2000m event. I would appreciate any suggestions.

CII (UK) provides a tool for a periodicized program that is tuned to your starting fitness level. The words can be unusual, e.g., UT1 corresponds to low aerobic range, etc., but otherwise it can be tuned to fit your needs and your willingness to commit.

If this works for you, I can send you a spreadsheet I have put together using my own pacing and heart rate needs, with the CII plan. You can customize it to fit your needs.

How long until the event? How many workouts can you do per week?

There's the two training plans that have already been mentioned by other folks. There's also Mike Caviston's Wolverine Plan and Pete Marston's Plan (which is a variation on that).
