Breaking 6 min

Hi! I'm an ok triathlete (I can age group podium in local races) but I've been screwing around on the erg at my gym (an octane ro) and based purely on my limited google searching putting up some pretty solid numbers. I did a long bike / run on Saturday then gym session on Sunday right before doing my first 2k. With a medium effort (I could definitly go faster but didn't want to affect the rest of my training too much) I put up a 6:15-6:17. I did actually start out at a 1:30 pace for the first 500 but the front squats I did earlier were making themselves known so I dropped to ~1:35. I'm not sure exactly the time because it didn't auto start or stop but 6:17 is an upper bound. Do you think I can hit 6 min right now (if tapered, max effort etc...). I'm 23 yrs, 6'3" ~195lb, would that be good?

Unfortunately, the times on that rowing machine are not consistent, nor comparable to concept2, which is what everyone on this forum uses. For example, here a fellow rows a 5:06 2k:

Ah, unfortunate ok. I thought it might be something like that but I couldn't find anything about that elsewhere. (Guess I didn't look hard enough) I'll have to find a concept 2 to see what comes up on that.

Afraid so. There's almost always a world of difference between a C2 and another erg, as there are only two or three I know of that are comparable.
Having said that, hopefully you'll still manage to achieve a solid result on a C2, but it's anyone's guess what it could be. On some inferior machines it can be a couple of minutes difference.

Since your physique and age is very positive for rowing...if you could break 6 on a C2 right now...you should bag the other sports and concentrate on becoming a world class rower... seriously!
Find a C2...do the same effort with a verified Drag factor no greater than 130 and report back. I would suspect that others (much more knowledgeable than me) on this forum would say the same.

I agree, assuming that rowing is enough to satisfy

Excellent. Watch a few form videos so you don't hurt yourself then add rowing into your workout plan.
Your WORKOUT should be comparable to a Concept2 workout even though your split numbers are not comparable to concept2 numbers.
You'll see huge core strength gains as well as cardio and legs/arms/shoulders/back. Good luck.
